WBA Mourns the Passing of Panamanian Boxing Legend Ismael Laguna – World Boxing Association

The international boxing community is in mourning. The World Boxing Association (WBA), its President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza, and the entire WBA family deeply regret the passing of legendary former world champion Ismael Laguna, who leaves behind an indelible mark on the history of combat sports.

Known around the world as “El Tigre de Colón,” Laguna was one of the most gifted and electrifying fighters ever to step between the ropes. Blessed with exceptional foot speed, remarkable defensive movement, and a razor-sharp jab, the Panamanian star was a central figure during one of the golden eras of the 135-pound division, capturing the WBA World Lightweight Championship on two occasions.

Laguna’s definitive arrival on the world stage came on April 10, 1965, inside the ring at Estadio Olímpico in Panama City, where he defeated legendary champion Carlos Ortiz by majority decision to claim the world title. Years later, in 1970, he once again demonstrated his greatness by reclaiming the lightweight crown with a technical knockout victory over American contender Mando Ramos in Los Angeles. Laguna concluded his brilliant career with a record of 65 wins, 9 losses, and 1 draw.

Beyond his accomplishments inside the ring, Ismael Laguna embodied dignity, sportsmanship, and a deep commitment to his community, inspiring countless generations of young athletes in Panama and around the world.

The WBA extends its deepest condolences to Laguna’s family, friends, and the entire Panamanian people during this difficult time. His memory and legacy will forever endure in the annals of world boxing.
