Wilfredo Gómez: No One Has Ever Matched Him at 122 Pounds – World Boxing Association

“His name is Wilfredo Gómez, and he will become a world champion.” With that headline, journalist Alí Ramos opened his column in Caracas newspaper El Nacional following the bantamweight final at the 1974 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Havana.

He was referring to Wilfredo Gómez, who, at just 17 years old, knocked out Cuba’s Luis Jorge Romero in the final. His performance was so impressive that even Cuban dictator Fidel Castro was reportedly captivated by his style, according to contemporary press accounts.

Alí Ramos was right. Gómez did not simply become a world champion; he won titles in three different weight classes, during an era when boxing was boxing and fighters had far fewer ways to avoid one another. The best fought the best.

Although we were not yet working in journalism at the time, that article inspired us to follow the career of this extraordinary fighter. In this writer’s opinion, Gómez is the greatest Puerto Rican boxer of all time. This article aims to make that case.

Forgive the apparent lack of modesty, but given our close relationship with Gómez and the attention we paid to his career, we believe few people today can recount his journey with the same firsthand knowledge and understanding.

Whenever a boxing great passes away, there is an instinct to turn that fighter into a legend, sometimes without sufficient justification. This case, however, leaves no room for debate.

Gómez is not merely a legend. He has every credential to be considered the greatest Puerto Rican fighter of all time and the greatest super bantamweight in boxing history.

The numbers do not lie. When he vacated his 122-pound title, his record stood at 38 wins, one loss and one draw, with all 38 victories coming by knockout. His only defeat had come at featherweight against Salvador Sánchez, while the draw occurred against Jacinto Fuentes in his professional debut. Along the way, he also recorded 17 successful defenses of his super bantamweight crown, all ending inside the distance—a historic mark for the division.

The Boy from Las Monjas

With a résumé of that magnitude, the nickname “Bazooka” suited him perfectly. He was also known as the “Niño de Las Monjas,” a reference to the neighborhood where he was born.

His boxing career took off at a remarkable pace. The talent he displayed from an early age accelerated his rise: he became an amateur world champion at 17 and a professional world champion at 20.

Gómez represented Puerto Rico at the 1972 Munich Olympics, but his tournament ended in his opening bout following a highly controversial decision against Egypt’s Mohamed Selim in the flyweight division. He later redeemed himself by winning the amateur world championship in Havana.

After completing his amateur career, he turned professional and began building the résumé that would eventually earn him a place in the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

Unbeatable at 122 Pounds

Gómez must be regarded as the greatest super bantamweight in history—not only because of his numbers, but also because of the caliber of opposition he faced.

He made his professional debut in Panama on November 16, 1974, drawing with Jacinto Fuentes. Once he overcame the pressure of that first fight, he reeled off 15 consecutive victories, all by knockout, earning a shot at the WBC super bantamweight world title against South Korea’s Dong Kyun Yum in San Juan.

That night, Wilfredo proved he was no fleeting prospect but a fighter destined to make history. He knocked out the South Korean in the 12th round, sending the raucous crowd into a frenzy as a new idol was born.

Throughout his reign, “Bazooka” stopped every opponent inside the distance in all 17 title defenses. And these were no ordinary challengers. His victims included Royal Kobayashi, Juan Antonio López, Sakad Petchyindee, Juan “Kid” Meza, Carlos Zárate, Leo Cruz, Lupe Pintor, Derrick Holmes and “Pambelito” Cervantes.

Moving Up to Featherweight

With little left to prove after dominating his division, Gómez took on the challenge of facing the best featherweight of his era and one of the greatest fighters in boxing history: Salvador Sánchez.

Promoted by Don King, the bout was billed as “The Battle of the Little Giants.”

On paper, Sánchez-Gómez looked competitive, and the Puerto Rican entered as a somewhat cautious favorite. The Mexican was Gómez’s equivalent in the division above and came into the fight riding an impressive knockout streak.

Wilfredo had the edge in power and pedigree, but beyond Sánchez, he faced another, less visible opponent: a dangerous cocktail of fame, money and bad company.

That combination cost him focus in the gym and turned his life into a social adventure. He trained more to make weight than to sharpen his skills and, unsurprisingly, entered the ring far from his best condition. None of that, however, diminishes Sánchez’s victory.

The fight itself is easy to summarize. There was no feeling-out process; both men immediately set about executing their game plans. Gómez came out hungry, seemingly intent on devouring the Mexican, but Sánchez refused to be intimidated. Cool and calculating, he caught Gómez with a left hook that sent him crashing to the canvas and left him badly hurt.

From that early knockdown onward, the Mexican employed the same formula that had made him famous since dethroning Danny “Little Red” López. Aggressive yet measured, Sánchez steadily wore down the Puerto Rican, forcing him to endure a grueling ordeal.

In the eighth round, his face swollen and bruised, Gómez succumbed to the champion’s remarkable volume and variety of punches. He paid the price for underestimating his opponent. That was the truth of it.

Gómez lost to Sánchez but retained his 122-pound crown, which he defended successfully four more times. His final defense came against the rugged Mexican Lupe Pintor, whom he knocked out in the 14th round of one of the greatest fights the division had seen up to that point.

That was Gómez’s final appearance at 122 pounds. When he vacated the title, his record stood at 38 wins, one loss and one draw, with all 38 victories coming by knockout.

The Defeat Against Azumah Nelson

Having once again swept through his division, Wilfredo needed another opportunity at featherweight. A rematch with Salvador Sánchez never materialized because the Mexican died tragically. The title eventually ended up in the hands of Juan Laporte, a Puerto Rican who had settled in New York.

Finally, the opportunity came for “Bazooka” to challenge his compatriot on March 31, 1984, at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. It was a demanding contest, but Gómez prevailed by decision to capture his second world title in a different weight class. It was one of only two victories in his career that did not come by knockout.

With little delay or ceremony, he accepted a fight against another of the era’s greats: African standout Azumah Nelson. Nelson stopped him in the 11th round of an emotional battle in San Juan, taking the title Gómez had won against Laporte.

It was a difficult defeat to absorb in front of his home fans, but it was not yet the end.

A Third World Title in a Different Weight Class

A fighter of Gómez’s stature was destined to make history. Real history.

Unable to remain at featherweight, he moved up to 130 pounds and pursued the WBA world title against American Rocky Lockridge, an awkward, accomplished, fast and technically sound opponent with an impressive record that included a victory over Roger Mayweather.

Lockridge agreed to travel to Puerto Rico, where he surrendered his title. Gómez won by split decision in a closely contested fight, once again displaying the grit and determination that had defined his career to capture his third world championship, this time at super featherweight under the WBA banner. Without question, fighting on home soil proved decisive.

Gómez was back in the spotlight, back in glory—and back to his hard-partying lifestyle. His parties at Flying Saucer, the nightclub he owned in Isla Verde, were public knowledge. Night after night, he entertained a circle of flatterers who inevitably gravitate toward major stars. At the time, he was a larger-than-life personality and a celebrity.

At that pace, Gómez was pushing his body beyond its limits. That was when, at the invitation of WBA president Gilberto Mendoza, he decided to establish his training camp in Maracay, Venezuela, at the iconic Hotel Pipo.

Away from the distractions of the outside world and working with Venezuelan trainer Héctor Criollo, Wilfredo prepared for his first title defense against Panama’s Alfredo Layne. Layne knocked him out in the ninth round.

By then, “Bazooka” was unquestionably no longer the same fighter. His physical abilities had diminished.

The Greatest Puerto Rican Boxer of All Time?

Beyond paying tribute to a great champion, this article seeks to support our position. In our view, Wilfredo deserves to be considered the greatest Puerto Rican boxer of all time, in a country that has produced extraordinary talents such as Carlos Ortiz, Esteban de Jesús, Alfredo Escalera, Félix “Tito” Trinidad, Wilfred Benítez, Héctor “Macho” Camacho, Miguel Cotto, Edwin Rosario and Iván Calderón, among many others.

The true elite of Puerto Rican boxing. The very best of the best.

Calderón also made 17 successful title defenses, but across two weight classes. Trinidad was an extraordinary multi-division champion; Camacho was a larger-than-life talent; Benítez became the youngest world champion at 17. But nobody accomplished what Wilfredo Gómez did. No record compares with his.

A Nickname That Fit Like a Glove

The nickname could not have been more fitting. Wilfredo Gómez was a human “Bazooka” inside the ring. His record and knockout numbers speak for themselves.

But he was far more than a devastating puncher. He was also a skilled boxer. When he was not looking to finish an opponent, he displayed exceptional upper-body movement. His weaving was precise and fluid, allowing him to slip punches and counter effectively.

Against tough opponents such as Lupe Pintor and Carlos Zárate, he was willing to test his own chin. But few could withstand his counters and hooks. His combination punching was nearly flawless, and above all, he possessed the most important attribute in a combat sport: courage.

Without a doubt, he embodied the fighting spirit of the brave Taíno people of the Enchanted Island.

Today, in the era of Naoya Inoue, Gómez’s numbers at super bantamweight still compare favorably with those of the Japanese star, strengthening the case for Wilfredo as the greatest 122-pound fighter in history.

It is up to Puerto Rican boxing writers and critics to decide whether “Bazooka” was indeed the greatest fighter their country has ever produced. But the numbers presented here speak for themselves.

Rest in peace, “Niño de Las Monjas.”

A great champion, Wilfredo Gómez.
