Eveling Ortega captures WBA Interim Light Flyweight World Title – World Boxing Association

The Olof Palme Convention Center in Managua came alive for one of the most emotional nights in Central American boxing. Eveling “La Colocha” Ortega reached the pinnacle of her career, earning a majority decision victory over Mexico’s Alma “La Leona” Meraz to capture the World Boxing Association (WBA) Interim Light Flyweight World Title.

The judges’ scorecards after 10 rounds reflected the competitive nature and intensity of the bout. Two officials scored it 97-93 in favor of the hometown fighter, while the third judge had it even at 95-95, sealing Ortega’s victory to the delight of the local crowd.

Meraz looked to impose her trademark aggressive Mexican-style pressure, cutting off the ring and targeting the body with tight hooks. Ortega, however, responded with an outstanding tactical approach. She relied on superior footwork and mobility, countered with quick two- and three-punch combinations to the head, and used her left jab to escape dangerous exchanges whenever the visiting fighter attempted to trap her against the ropes.

Down the stretch, fueled by the continuous support of the crowd, “La Colocha” picked up the pace in the center of the ring and fearlessly traded punches at close quarters, securing the crucial rounds that ultimately swung the scorecards in her favor.
