Boxing In Scotland: McAllister Retains Commonwealth With Amaoko Victory

Last night, at the Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, Tommy Gilmour and Matchroom Sport hosted a Friday fightnight which would see Lee McAllister of Aberdeen defend his Commonwealth Lightweight title for the second time when he faced Ghanaian – Samuel Amaoko.

Sporting a red striped hairdo – the colours of Aberdeen, his favourite football team, McAllister had huge crowd support.

A very cautious start from both men, Amaoko keeps a high guard – looking for the counter-punch. Both boxers keep up a ‘twitchy’ stance hoping to encourage a punch that they can counter.

Inside the last minute of round three, the Aberdeen Assassin lands a decent right to the face of Amaoko, who has to cover up in the corner.

Round five and McAllister lands another right to the head of the Ghanaian who is pressured in to the corner. McAllister keeps him there and unleashes a barrage of shots.

Amaoko continues the following rounds with a half-hearted effort – throwing few punches.

Fighting stops in the closing half minute of round seven for Amaoko to retrieve his gum-shield. McAllister has sustained a cut to the left brow from a clash of heads. He takes a left hook from Amaoko at the start of the eighth and is clearly annoyed with himself for it.

The Ghanaian ups the work-rate in the next couple of rounds, but McAllister picks it up in rounds eleven and twelve.

Sky Sports Statistics reveal that McAllister landed 78 of 487 punches thrown (16% success) while Amaoko landed 66 of 372 punches (17%).

McAllister wins by Unanimous Decision 116-112; 117-112; 117-112 to retain his Commonwealth Lightweight title.

McAllister admitted afterward that it was a terrible fight and he was ‘gutted’ at his performance. He improves to 31 wins (7 by KO) 2 losses (1 by KO) while Amaoko drops to 6 wins (2 by KO) 1 loss.
