Boxer ‘Super-Scotty’ Haywood got more than he bargained for when he fought John ‘Fireball’ Fewkes on Friday night at the Harvey Hadden Leisure Centre in Nottingham, England.
Having scored a draw with the Sheffield man – Haywood left the ring only to hear that partner Leann had gone in to labour.
Daughter Seann Faith was born in the early hours of Sunday morning. Haywood said it had been an emotional and tiring weekend but was overjoyed at the birth of his baby-girl.
The Frank Maloney promoted fightnight proved to be a successful night all round for the Shinfield’s Gym in Derbyshire. Four fighters under the wing of Mike and Jason Shinfield gave impressive performances.
PrizeFighter Champion Ovill McKenzie was too much for ‘Peoples Poet’ Billy Boyle of Sheffield. Boyle found himself on the canvas inside the first minute of the opening round. He remained on the defensive and was clearly unsteady from McKenzie’s heavy punches. The likeable boxer was stopped by Referee Terry O’Connor just as trainer Glyn Rhodes threw in the towel in round one.
Light Heavyweight McKenzie was scheduled to fight Tony Bellew next – but Frank Maloney confirmed this week that the fight will not go ahead and that McKenzie is looking for the British Title. He now goes on to fight on the undercard of Rendall Munroe’s WBC Super Bantamweight Title Eliminator against Victor Terrazas on April 23rd, McKenzies opponent is yet to be confirmed.
Jason Shinfield told SaddoBoxing this morning that he thought “McKenzie was awesome on Friday night. All four lads performed really well”.
Young Mutley – previously under Errol Johnson at the Wednesbury Boxing Academy – “is nearly back to his best”, according to new trainer Jason. The former British Welterweight Champion secured a third round TKO after ‘The Gent’ Scott Woolford sustained a nasty cut to the forehead.
Up and coming Welterweight Dale Miles added another victory to his perfect record by scoring an impressive second round TKO over tough veteran Kristian Laight. Miles – who’s record now stands at 8 wins (5 by KO) and no losses – is “going to be a star,” says Jason Shinfield.
And as for Scott Haywood, Jason added, “Scott produced one of his best displays of boxing in a while,” and hopes Haywood will pick up from that when he’s got over the shock of being a new Dad!
