Boxing Preview Analysis: Manny Pacquiao vs. Joshua Clottey

Okay, so its not the Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr super fight we all wanted. However a potentially tough matchup is in store for the Filipino when he takes on the rugged Joshua Clottey tonight in Dallas, Texas.Clottey, from Ghana but based in the Bronx, has only three defeats in 38 which have all occurred against World Champions. A welterweight for most of his career, Clottey, after an unsuccessful bid for world honours against Antonio Margarito in 2006, finally became world champion two years later when defeating the talented Zab Judah in nine rounds. After dropping the IBF belt, Clottey would go on to challenge Miguel Cotto for the vacant WBO version in June last year losing a close, tough 12 round verdict.

Now he makes his second bid for WBO honours.In Pacquiao, Clottey meets a man recognised by many as the pound for pound king. A man who has been world champion in divisions ranging from flyweight all the way to welterweight.Pacquiao’s credentials are unquestionable. In against the odds battles against the likes of Marco Antonio Barrera and Oscar De La Hoya, Pacman pummelled both en route to one sided stoppage wins. Names such as Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto have also tasted defeat to the future hall of famer.If rumours are to be believed, this could be Pacquiao’s last year in the sport.

With Floyd Mayweather Jr meeting Shane Mosley, Manny’s choice of big name opponents is more limited.He must however maintain his focus against Clottey. Although Clottey has already been defeated by a Pacman victim, Miguel Cotto, he cannot afford to be taken lightly.After a masterful performance against Cotto last time out, Pacquiao appears to be at the peak of his powers. Clottey will undoubtedly be a tough foe but I feel Pacquiao will be the victor after 12 entertaining albeit lopsided rounds.
