Former European Super-Bantamweight Champion – Rendall Munroe, is at a training camp in Portugal right now as he prepares for his WBC Title shot against Toshiaki Nishioka in Tokyo next month.
But on Thursday, SaddoBoxing went along to the Shinfields gym in Somercotes, Derbyshire, England to see how the ‘Boxing Binman’s preparations are going.
When I arrived at the gym, Munroe had already had a photoshoot at a nearby industrial plant (Simms Metals) where he was presented with a dazzling new outfit by Female Boxer Laura Saperstein of ‘Boxxerworld’ to wear for his Title fight. But it was back to business in the gym as soon as the ‘shoot’ was over.
Munroe was relaxed as he shadow-boxed in the ring – awaiting the arrival of sparring partner, Featherweight – Iain Weaver from Ferndown, Bournemouth . Weaver – part of the British Amateur Squad – won Silver in Russia this year and is aiming to bring back a medal from the 2012 Olympics.
Both men independently loosened up in the ring before pounding the punch bags. Then they sparred together – Weaver was confident and mature in the ring giving Munroe several decent rounds. It was good to watch them both.
Munroe was around 9 stone 5 / 6 lbs at the time, but never really puts on too much weight between fights as he likes to keep himself fit anyway.
He said he was ‘feeling good’ and ‘looking forward to Tokyo ’. Mike Shinfield told me that although there’s not really a difference in altitude (going over to Tokyo ) – they’ve been told that the air does seem ‘thin’, so – taking no chances – they’re preparing Munroe for this with mountain running in Portugal .
I asked Munroe about the time he met Nishioka at the WBC Night of Champions in Cardiff this Summer. ‘I wasn’t fazed by him at all’ Munroe said, ‘I’m even more confident of beating him’.
Rendall Munroe fights for the WBC Super-Bantamweight Title against Nishioka on the 24th October in Tokyo.
