On Saturday night, WBA super bantam supremo Wilfredo Vazquez Jr and Ivan Hernadez lit up Kissimmee, Florida’s Silver Spurs Arena with fistic fireworks for 11 action packed rounds.
It was ex-WBO super fly beltholder Hernadez’s third try at a super bantam crown and the lanky Mexican came to fight as he immediately got to grips with the champion.
By the middle rounds, Vazquez’s power began to make a difference as the Puerto Rican started land with authority. But Hernandez wouldn’t go away and at times took control of the bout.
The championship rounds saw Vazquez take over, lashing his rival with both hands until the bout was called at 0:50 of the 11th frame.
Vazquez retains the title for the first time, improving to 20-0-1 (17), while Hernandez is left still searching for super bantam gold at 28-5-1 (17).
Chief support was provided by a hotly contested clash between middleweights Anthony Greenidge, 14-6-1 (5), and Raul Casarez, 16-2 (8), who took the split decision to capture the vacant WBO Youth title.
