Former WBA lightweight champion Paulus “The Hitman” Moses (26-1, 18 KOs) scored a fifth-round technical knockout on Thursday (Nov. 25) in his hometown of Windhoek, Namibia, defeating Argentine challenger Sergio Omar Priotti (22-8-1, 8 KOs).
Priotti took the fight to the former champion from the opening bell, scoring with body punches. Moses landed an uppercut near the end of the opening stanza, serving notice of what was to come.
Moses seemed energized by the hometown crowd in round two, and his aggression came in the form of a well-rounded attack consisting of combinations and body shots.
Priotti was a game opponent, and Moses had to work behind his jab in the third round to fend him off.
Ringside observers believe Moses had one of the best rounds of his career in the fourth, unloading his entire arsenal on the the Argentinean. This led Priotti to refuse to answer the bell in round five.
“Priotti came to fight but I am on a mission to regain my title,” Moses said after the fight. “I hope my promoter Don King heard my punches all the way from Namibia. I’m ready for anyone, including Miguel Acosta.”
In his last appearance on May 29, Moses lost his title by sixth-round knockout in a showdown against then-WBA interim lightweight champion Miguel Acosta. Moses traveled to Japan in 2008 and defeated then-champion Yusuke Kobori to win the WBA lightweight crown.
Anxious to get back to winning after suffering the first defeat of his career, Moses felt compelled to redeem himself at the same venue where he lost his title, the Windhoek Country Club Resort & Casino. Moses was born in Okapya and now resides in the Namibian capital of Windhoek.
