Boxing Update: WBC Rules Aquirre To Challenge Keb Baas

Jose Antonio Aguirre, a formidable former WBC strawweight world champion who made 10 successful defenses of the title, will challenge Mexican “Cinderella Man” Gilberto Keb Baas who, in the “Upset of the Year,” defeated WBC light flyweight world champion Omar Niño to capture the green and gold belt last November 6 in his hometown of Merida.

Aguirre, with a record of 37-9-1 with 23 knockouts, made a comeback fight on August 14, 2010, in his hometown of Villahermosa, defeating Javier Roman by knockout in five rounds; Aguirre has been an exemplary boxer who has never had any problems outside the ring, and who has maintained perfect physical condition and was medically approved to fight champion Keb.

The WBC Rule 1.21, a) iv) permits former champions request the opportunity to fight for the title.

1.21 Championship Defense Obligations.

a) Voluntary Defense Obligations: All WBC recognized champions must defend their title at least two (2) times a year. Champions will defend their titles either in a voluntary or mandatory defense, as follows:

iv) A former or retired world champion, upon majority vote of the Board of Governors.

We wish both boxers the best of luck in this great event, which is the launching of the “Mayan 2012 Prophecy” series of events.
