Friday night, at the Municipal Hall (‘Muni’) Colne, England, Steve Wood (VIP Promotions) hosted a fightcard which saw popular local boxer – Shayne ‘The Pain’ Singleton (aka ‘Singy’) win convincingly on points over Gavin Deacon of Northampton.

It was a lively crowd at the ‘Muni’ and they didn’t seem bothered that they had to wait for the ring to arrive.

Shayne Singleton (Colne) v Gavin Deacon (Northampton)
6 x 3 Light-Welterweight Contest

The crowd were a bit over-excited during this contest.

Singleton dominated the fight, seeming intent on putting on a good performance. He looks confident – affording himself some ‘flashy’ moves in the third and increases the pressure on Deacon who is literally ‘saved by the bell’ in the closing seconds of the round. Deacon keeps his gloves up high, but ‘Singy’ gets through with long-reaching lefts to secure the points win 60-55.

He improves to 7 wins (2 by KO) while Deacon drops to 6 wins 20 losses (5 by KO) and 1 draw.

Jeff Thomas (Lytham-St.Annes) v Rick Boulter (Lincoln)
6 x 2 Welterweight Contest

Lincoln man – Boulter, was caught almost immediately at the start of this six rounder and was wobbled again later in the opening round. It’s a decent scrap between these two but ‘Jazzy Jeff’ seems to have the better success and catches Boulter again in the fourth.

Referee John Latham sees it a 58-58 draw – which doesn’t go down well with the home-crowd (!)

Thomas’s record now stands at 9 wins (1 by KO) 6 losses (2 by KO) and 2 draws.

Boulter’s record stands at 1 win 8 losses (1 by KO) and 3 draws.

Stevie Taylor (Darwen) v Zahid Kahut (Batley)
6 x 2 Cruiserweight Contest

Debutant Taylor had huge support from the local crowd and was closely watched by Jamie Moore when he faced tall, awkward boxer – Kahut.

The Darwen man put in bags of effort and lands some big punches in the opening round. Kahut tries some decent uppercuts in the third but it seems like Taylor is looking to land a big shot. It’s a big round four for the debutant who pressures the Batley Boxer and almost finishes him in the closing seconds of the round. But despite being backed up on the ropes and subjected to heavy punches – Kahut keeps coming.

Continuing to throw the right though – Kahut leaves himself open and Taylor immediately counters with the right. This becomes a regular occurrence throughout the contest.

A good first outing for the debutant who wins on points 58-56

Kahut drops to 4 wins and 4 losses.

Terry Needham (Liverpool) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)
4 x 3 Light-Welterweight Contest

A good second win for Needham who sustained a bad cut in his pro-debut last time out. Facing experienced Laight, Needham struck me as being a ‘considerate’ boxer -that is until he landed a low blow in the second round (!) – clearly by accident though. He missed his mark with shots a few times when he misjudged his range, but landed some decent body-shots which Laight had to soak up. Another low blow comes later in the contest and Referee Latham has to warn the Liverpool man to ‘keep them up’. He uses the right with success to win on points 40-36 and notch up his second pro-win.

Laight drops to 6 wins 90 losses (4 by KO) and 6 draws.

Luke Blackledge (Accrington) v James Tucker (Doncaster)
6 x 2 Super-Middleweight Contest

Blackledge (alias ‘Robbo’) gets his second win on points against tough James Tucker – who was clearly motivated for this contest.

Blackledge has a good first round – using body-shots with success. Tucker looked motivated but misses his mark a few times with wild swinging shots in the third. But the Doncaster boxer ‘goes for it’ in the fourth and fifth rounds. Blackledge keeps focussed though – landing the left to secure a points win 59-57

He improves to 2 wins (1 by KO) while Tucker drops to 3 wins (1by KO) 35 losses (2 by KO) and 3 draws.
