Lee Glover (Tipton) v Dougie Curran (Newcastle)
10 x 3 Vacant International Masters featherweight Title
‘The Tipton Slasher’ entered the ring to huge support from the Walsall crowd.
It seems pretty evenly matched as they started this ten rounder, but Glover picks it up in the latter rounds despite fighting with a cut to the left eye which he sustained in the third.
Curran got off to a decent start and proved a tough opponent who regularly smiled at Glover as if taunting him. The Northerner loses his gum-shield end of the seventh round, then comes back to pressure Glover on the ropes. There were two no-knockdowns this round.
Glover doesn’t start the eighth well but finishes it strongly, then gets deducted a point at the end of the ninth for a low blow. Fighting is interrupted when both men are sent to their corners to get their gloves re-taped at the same time.
The tenth sees the two men give it one last ‘push’ but Glover secured the points win 98-94 to win the Title.
He improves to 6 wins (2 by KO), while Curran drops to 5 wins 6 losses (1 by KO) and 1 draw.
Jamie Ball (Coseley) v Andrejs Loginovs (Latvia)
6 x 3 Middleweight Contest
Popular ‘Bully’ got caught with a ‘beaut’ of a headshot in round one but his Latvian opponent was on his knees by the end of the round (no knockdown). The Coseley man settled in to the second frame and picks up the pace. A great round three for Ball who forced a stoppage at the end of the frame.
Ball improves to 12 wins (3 by KO) and 1 draw, while Loginova drops to 5 wins (2 by KO) 6 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw
Adam Corbett (Tipton) v James Tucker (Doncaster)
4 x 2 Light Heavyweight Contest
Debutant Corbett had a tough first outing against experienced ‘slugger’ Tucker, who came out ‘all guns blazing’ in the final round! But ‘Ronny’ (!) secures the points win 39-38 to ‘get off the mark’. Tucker’s record stands at 3 wins (1 by KO) 39 losses (2 by KO).
Thomas Costello (Chelmsley Wood) v Ivars Sedlins (Latvia)
6 x 3 Light Middleweight Contest
Costello – ‘The Natural’, landed a huge shot to the head of Latvian – Sedlins, who fell back heavily on the canvas – ‘out cold’ in the second frame! Referee Shaun Messer immediately stopped the contest and summoned ringside paramedics. It was a worrying time as Sedlins lay on the canvas but after some minutes later he was able to leave the ring unaided.
Costello improves to 9 wins no losses and 1 draw, while Sedlins drops to 4 wins (2 by KO) 4 losses (1 by KO) and 2 draws.
Saquib Amir (Halelsowen) v Ryan McNicol (Glasgow)
4 x 2 Super Featherweight Contest
Debutant Amir, aka ‘Zap the Ripper’, faced tough Glaswegian opponent – McNicol. McNicol landed bodyshots at the end of the first frame which the Halesowen man clearly felt but he returned the favour when he had McNicol under pressure at the end of the second.
Amir secured the 39-37 points win for his first outing.
McNicol drops to 1 win 8 losses (1 by KO) and 2 draws.
Jason Welborn (Tividale) v Rick Boulter (Lincoln)
4 x 2 Middleweight Contest
A decent scrap between these two sees Welborn find success with the left to the head, securing a points win (40-36) over Carl Greaves-trained Boulter.
Welborn improves to 5 wins (2 by KO) and 1 loss (1 by KO) while Boulter drops to 1 win 11 losses (1 by KO) and 3 draws.
