Ex-Champ Devon Alexander Signs With Golden Boy Promotions

ByBoxing Press 20/09/2011

A gifted boxer whose talent and compelling story has captivated fans around the world, former Junior Welterweight World Champion Devon Alexander “The Great” is on track to regain his title after his June win over Lucas Matthysse, and to help him get there, he has enlisted Golden Boy Promotions to co-promote him with his own company, The Great Promotions, on his way to boxing superstardom.

“I am extremely excited to join forces with Golden Boy Promotions, the premier promoter in our sport,” said Alexander. “Golden Boy has several fighters in their stable, in and around my weight division that would make great fights for me. I look forward to challenging the best in boxing in the coming years.”

“Devon Alexander’s resume and talent speak for themselves and he’s a perfect addition to our team both as a boxer and as a promoting partner,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “With everything he’s accomplished so far, it’s hard to believe that he’s only 24, but that’s good news for boxing fans because it’s clear that the best is yet to come for him.”

“Devon Alexander is one of boxing’s most talented and accomplished young stars,” said Drexel Stith, COO of The Great Promotions. “We here at The Great Promotions are happy to partner with Golden Boy Promotions, and with this partnership I believe Devon’s career will be catapulted to super stardom.”

“Oscar de la Hoya has always been one of my favorite fighters, said Alexander’s trainer Kevin Cunningham. “He ducked no one and fought the best in his era, so he knows all about the bight fights. Devon has that same mentality and now that we are working with Golden Boy we can make the fights that the fans want to see.”

A boxer for much of his 24 years, Devon Alexander (22-1, 13 KO’s) showed his character early on in life, as he opted for the discipline of the gym over the temptations of the streets in his native St. Louis. This discipline, coupled with an amazing level of talent in the ring, led him to 300 amateur wins and a host of titles.

Alexander was not content and after just missing out on the 2004 Olympic Games and turned professional at 17 in May of 2004, stopping Vincent Torres in a single round. After winning fight after fight, adding the WBC Youth and WBC Continental Americas titles along the way, Alexander won the WBC Super Lightweight World Championship in August of 2009 by stopping Junior Witter in eight rounds.

Seven months later, the southpaw added the IBF World Title with an eighth round technical knockout win over power punching Juan Urango. After a win over Andriy Kotelnik in August of 2010, he lost a 10-round technical decision to Timothy Bradley in their unification bout on January 29, 2011.

After his first and only professional loss, which came after head-butts from Bradley affected his vision, Alexander rebounded in June with a 10-round split decision victory over the tough, highly regarded Lucas Matthysse and is eager to get back in the ring and continue on the road to another world title.
