Stourbridge man – Rob Norton lost his British Cruiserweight Title on Friday night to Londoner – Leon ‘Solid’ Williams.
The Francis and George Warren’s Queensberry Promotions event at York Hall, Bethnal Green, saw a packed out crowd of mainly Williams supporters.
Norton’s awkward ‘open’ Southpaw style proved tricky for Williams who got off to a nervous start, but he finally made an impression in the third round – nipping in a quick right hook which lands on target and the crowd cheers ‘Solid, Solid’. Norton’s long-reaching left and right keeps the distance between the two men but there isn’t much work-rate as the Champion seems content to just ‘keep Williams at bay’.
There’s more action in the last three rounds of the contest, with Williams picking up the pace, but Norton teases the local man – resting back on the ropes as if to say ‘that was nothing – what else you got?’
Williams gets the Split Decision: 116-114; 114-115; 116-113.
On the same Bill – Ryan Walsh of Cromer, Norfolk, won the vacant English Super-Bantamweight Title when he out-pointed Liam Richards of Wiltshire.
In Bolton on Saturday night, Scott Quigg of Bury out-punched experienced Jason Booth of Nottingham for seven rounds with Booth retiring at the end of the seventh.
