Irish Amateur Boxing Squad Named For Olympic Test Event

The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have named a six-man squad for next week’s Olympic Test Event in London.

The tournament, which will be contested on a last-eight basis in each weight category, begins at the ExCel, the venue for boxing at the 2012 Olympic Games, next Thursday.

Ken Egan, who has been named at light-heavyweight in the squad, Declan Geraghty, David Oliver Joyce, Conrad Cummings, Tommy McCarthy and Con Sheehan will represent Ireland in London.

Irish head coach Billy Walsh said that he expects most of the world’s Elite boxing nations will be competing in the English capital

“Hopefully, we’ll have as many boxers as possible back in London again next year for the real thing,” added Ken Egan

John Joe Nevin, Darren O’Neill and Michael Conlan qualified for the 2012 Olympics from last month’s AIBA World Championships in Baku.
