Friday night, at Liverpool’s Olympia, local boxer Derry Mathews lost out to Italian – Emiliano Marsili in a bloody battle which saw Mathews on the canvas in the sixth and finally stopped mid-way through the seventh when Referee Howard Foster stepped in.

Derry Mathews (Liverpool) v Emiliano Marsili (Italy)
Vacant IBO World Lightweight Title

It’s a steady first round with both men ‘eyeing each other up’, but Southpaw Marsili is fast and ‘twitchy’ – constantly bobbing on his feet. Mathews settled in to rounds two and three (despite the delay at the start of the second frame when the venue’s lights went off), but he leaves his face ‘open’ and Marsili finds it.

The popular Liverpool man starts to get through with the jab in round three and the British fans start to cheer. He’s bundled over in the last half minute of the round but it’s a no knockdown.
He pressures Marsili on the ropes mid-way through the frame and lands a decent right to the face of the Italian in the last thirty seconds – but his face is awash with blood mainly from a nose injury. Mathews starts the fifth round well.

The sixth round was the most notable of the fight. Mathews face was covered in blood from the nose and mouth. The crowds were noisy and on their feet as the Liverpool man landed a big right mid-way through the round and Marsili was pressured back on the ropes under a barrage of shots. But moments later, Marsili comes back with head shots and a left to the body that sent Mathews to one knee. He takes the count and boxing resumes but Mathews is bundled over to the canvas. It’s a no knockdown but even so – the fall saps energy and by the end of the frame Mathews’ left eye is also cut, adding more blood to the already bloody face. After a number of shots to the head – Referee Howard Foster steps in mid-way through the seventh to stop the fight.

Afterwards, an emotional Mathews leaned on the ropes – gazing out at the crowds who continued to clap and cheer their support.

Marsili wins the IBO Lightweight Title. His record improves to 24 wins (10 by KO) no losses and 1 draw, while Mathews record now stands at 29 wins (15 by KO) 6 losses (6 by KO) and 1 draw.

Steve Harkin (Liverpool) v Jason Ball (Doncaster)
10 x 3 Vacant British Masters Light-Middleweight Title
and Central Area Light-Middleweight Title

Also on the Stephen Vaughan Promoted Bill (screened live on BoxNation), Liverpool’s – Steve Harkin lost his Title fight against Doncaster’s Jason Ball when he was stopped after a seventh round knockdown.

The first few rounds are closely fought. A good right from Ball lands to the face of Harkin in the third minute of round three, it’s been a better round for Ball. The Doncaster man sustains a cut to the left eye in the fourth round. Harkin starts the fifth round better but a right from Ball lands on target and Harkins knees dip. Ball lands two or three head shots and Harkin looks disorientated in the final minute of the round.

Both men land with head-shots in the sixth, but Harkins head is snapped back by the force of Ball’s punches. Harkin goes down to the canvas from two rights to the head in the first minute of round seven. He gets up for the count but Referee Phill Edwards – having taken a good long look at the Liverpool man – waves off the contest.

Ball improves to 5 wins (4 by KO) 5 losses (1 by KO) and 1 draw, while Harkin drops to 5 wins (1 by KO) 3 losses (1 by KO).

Lyndon Newman (Stockport) v Steve Spence (Scunthorpe)
4 x 3 Minute Rounds Light-Middleweight Contest

It was a right ‘tear-up’ between these two men! A scrappy fight which resulted in a draw.

‘Lights Out’ Newman improves to 4 wins (1 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) and 1 draw.
Spence improves to 2 wins (1 by KO) 14 losses (3 by KO) and 3 draws.

Joe Tonks (Liverpool) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)
4 x 3 Minute Lightweight Contest

A closely fought contest sees Tonks get the marginal points win (39-38) – despite a great performance from Kristian Laight.

Tonks improves to 4 wins 2 losses, while Laights record now stands at 6 wins, 111 losses (4 by KO) and 6 draws.

Tom Carus (Liverpool) v Robin Deakin (Crawley)
4 x 3 Minute Rounds Featherweight Contest

Tommy Carus faced ‘Rockin Robin’. Carus wins on points (40-36) to notch up his second pro-win, while Deakin drops to 1 win 43 losses (8 by KO)

Mick Philips (Debut) v Matt Seawright (Tamworth)
4 x 3 Minute Rounds Welterweight Contest

Debutant Philips had a difficult first pro contest against experienced Seawright. A messy fight which sees Philips ‘off the mark’ with a 40-36 points victory.

Seawright’s record now stands at 3 wins 53 losses (11 by KO) and 2 draws

Andy Colquhoun (Liverpool) v Dan Carr (Trowbridge)
4 x 3 Minute Rounds Super-Featherweight Contest

Colquhoun notches up his second pro-win, while Carr’s record now stands at 2 wins (1 by KO) 20 losses (1 by KO) and 2 draws.

Paul Butler (Ellesmere Port) v Michael Ramabeletsa (Bristol, via South Africa)
8 x 3 Minute Rounds Super-Flyweight Contest

Butler faced last minute opponent Ramabeletsa. Berrated by his corner for not keeping his gloves up – Ramabeletsa paid the price.

Butler gets the points win 80-72 and improves to 6 wins (2 by KO)
Ramabeletsa drops to 6 wins (3 by KO) 8 losses (1 by KO)

Joe Selkirk (Liverpool) v Ryan Toms (Middlesex)
8 x 3 Minute Rounds Light-Middleweight Contest

Selkirk forced a fifth round stoppage of Ryan Toms – who’s right eye ballooned at an incredible rate forcing Referee John Latham to stop the contest following advice from the ringside Doctor.

Selkirk improves to 8 wins (5 by KO) no losses, while Toms drops to 9 wins (4 by KO) 2 losses (2 by KO) and 1 draw.

Matty Clarkson (Preston) v Billy Boyle (Sheffield)
4 x 3 Minute Rounds Light-Heavyweight Contest

Likeable Sheffield Boxer – Billy Boyle found himself on the canvas in the third frame of this scheduled four-rounder. Up till that point, both men had been warned to watch the heads. Clarkson targets head and body with the left to get the points win. He improves to 5 wins, no losses and 1 draw. Boyle drops to 13 wins (7 by KO) 15 losses (4 by KO).

Wayne Adenyi (Birkenhead) v Jody Meikle (Scunthorpe)
4 x 3 Minute Rounds Cruiserweight Contest

Both Adenyi and Meikle were getting caught with wild shots in this contest – the last of the evening. Either man could have gone down but Adenyi kept focussed to win on points.
Adenyi gets his second pro-win while Meikle drops to 1 win, 14 losses (1 by KO).
