It is a distinct possibility that if Ricardo Mayorga disposes of Italy’s Michele Piccirillo when the two fight on Don King’s pay-per-view card on August 13, Mayorga might be in line to face former light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas. Defeating Piccirillo might prove to be more difficult than imagined as the Italian has forty-four wins against two losses, and he is a former IBF welterweight champion, having decisioned Cory Spinks. Also, Mayorga is coming into the fight from a career worst beating at the hands of now retired Felix Trinidad last year. A Mayorga victory brings him the WBC light middleweight title, the title that Vargas, above all wants for himself as it is the “green belt” worn by the legendary Julio Cesar Chavez. Vargas himself faces Spain’s Javier Castillejo, also a former world champion on August 20.
