Friday night, P J Rowson and Errol Johnson promoted a fightnight which saw Jason Welborn successfully defend his Midlands Area Welterweight Title against ‘Super’ Scot Haywood.

The Bill was originally set to headline the re-match between Enzo Maccarinelli and Shane McPhilbin but the contest was pulled after Maccarinelli sustained a hand injury at the beginning of the month.

The Show – hosted at Wolverhampton Civic – also featured six undercard bouts from local boxers.

Jason Welborn (Tividale) v Scott Haywood (Derby)
Midlands Area Welterweight Title

Haywood had lots of support from his travelling fans – maybe that’s what distracted him as he entered – gambolling around the ring!

The contest got off to a fairly evenly matched fight but despite Haywood looking the classier boxer – Welborn’s shots looked heavier. A solid right from Welborn to the head of Haywood saw the Derby man on his knee in the fifth round. Haywood sensibly stayed on one knee for the count then came back with all guns blazing. Welborn came back again to pressure Haywood in the Shinfields corner but Haywood did a great job of blocking the shots and many hit his arms. Haywood then landed some decent rights to the head in succession before Welborn – again – laid in to Haywood. He seemed to put all his weight behind the shots and Haywood took to his knee from a bodyshot. Haywood resumed fighting but was shaking his head as if to say he’d had enough at the end of the round. Jason Shinfield coaxed him back to the corner but the fight was waved off after Haywood seemingly retired himself at the end of the fifth.

Welborn keeps the belt and improves to 10 wins (5 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) while Haywood drops to 22 wins (4 by KO) 7 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw.
