On the undercard of HBO’s enormous PPV card from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas tonight
there was a lot of great action and the landscape of at least one weight division changed dramatically.
Jesus Chavez succeeded in his mission to wrest the IBF Lightweight title belt from the grasp of Leavander Johnson over the course of 11 action packed rounds. Chavez jumped on the champion from the start and proved just two vigorous for the 35 year old Johnson, who was stopped in the 11th after absorbing a sustained thrashing along the ropes.
Sugar Shane Mosley made good on his second bout back as a welterweight, outboxing his undefeated opponent, Jose Luis Cruz, to take a solid unanimous decision win. But just as in his previous outing, against David Estrada this spring, the once breathtakingly skilled Mosley
looked little more than just a good, experienced fighter in a fairly uneventful bout.
In a much more spirited contest, Australian based Tunisian Naoufel Ben Rabah overcame Arturo Morua to win an IBF Light Welter title eliminator. Rabah solidified his chances to face current IBF Champion Ricky Hatton by canvassing Morua twice enroute to a well deserved unanimous decision.
