Saturday Night Boxing Round-up

ByCurtis McCormick 18/09/200518/09/2005

Aside from the high profile Las Vegas card last night, a lot of important action took place across the globe, so let’s get busy!

In Tacoma, Washington it was another entertaining Battle on the Boat put on by Brian Halquist Productions at the Emerald Queen Casino. In the main event, super active heavyweight Chauncy Welliver went to 28-4-3 (11) in his tenth bout of the year by stopping journeyman Travis Fulton in four rounds. Southpaw Welliver was inflicting a beating and the bout was ended due to a cut suffered by Fulton. Also on the bill, light welter David “El Torrito” Torres stayed perfect at 11-0 (8) by blowing out Andrew Marquez in the first with a savage left hook that Marquez never quite recovered from.

Kinder, Louisiana saw former WBO light welter champ DeMarcus Corley stop opponent Johnny Walker after nine one sided rounds. Looking to stay busy until a world title fight opportunity materializes, Corley canvassed his opponent twice and moves to 31-4-1 (17) while the Florida based Walker has now lost his 15th straight contest.

On a Top Rank show in Phoenix, Arizona two big names lost their fights. Mexican legend and former three weight world champion body punching terror Julio Cesar Chavez was stopped in the fifth round when he broke a hand and could not continue against welterweight Grover Wiley, who improves to 29-6-1 (14). Chavez’s son, Julio Jr, was also on the bill and went to 22-0 (17) by thrashing Corey Alarcon. Julio Jr, will see if he can avenge the loss of his 43 year old father by taking on Walker in November. The real shocker of the evening was when celebrated local middleweight Jesus Gonzales was canvassed three times by former Mexican Olympian Jose Luis Zertuche before the bout was stopped in the eighth. Zertuche improves his stock greatly with the dismantling of Gonzales and climbs to 16-2-2 (13).

At the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Virginia former super feather world title challenger Lamont Pearson won the vacant USBA title in spectacular fashion, finishing Shamir Reyes with a crushing body shot in the sixth round. Pearson ascends to 22-3-1 (12) while local light middle prospect Jimmy Lange climbs to 26-2-1 (18) by putting out the previously perfect Perry Ballard in four.

Irish middleweight hopeful John Duddy continued his American campaign, brutally rubbing out Joseph Brady in a single round to go to 12-0 (11). The Ulsterman handed the New Mexican his fifth consecutive loss and continues to improve, heading towards a showdown with the Irish Middleweight champ Matthew Macklin.

Heading now to South America, ex-WBO Featherweight boss Julio Pablo Chacon put down rival Julio Cesar Alganarez in the second while cruising to a wide points decision in Mendoza, Argentina. “El Relampago” takes the South American Super Feather crown in the process and adds the 53rd win (37 early) to his resume to go along with just 7 defeats.

In Santiago, Chile Juan Nahuel’s corner threw in the towel in the eighth to save their man from further punishment at the hands of Moises Gutierrez. The vacant Chilean Super Bantam belt had been up for grabs and it’s new owner Guiterrez sees his record to 12-2 (5).

Heading north into the Caribbean now, rough and ready ex-WBO Super Bantam kingpin Agapito Sanchez continued his return with a ten round points win over Edison Torres. the 35 year old Sanchez, 36-11-3 (18), is perhaps best known for neutralizing the vaunted offensive abilities of Manny Pacquiao in a unified world title fight by tackling, fouling and roughing up the talented Filipino in 2001. On the same bill, Dahianna Santana improves to 9-3 (2) by taking the WIBA Fedelatina Bantamweight title with a victory over winless Grecia Nova.

Crossing the Atlantic we hit the National Stadium in Dublin, Ireland where fans were treated to the novelty of the three fighting Hyland brothers all securing victory. Super bantam Paul and featherweight Patrick improves to 4-0 while super feather Eddie Hyland goes to 3-0.
Heading now to Llsenberg, Germany where middleweight Dirk Dzemski retains the NBA title with a third round knockout of George Klinesmith. The Magdeburg man wins his fourth in a row and moves to 26-1 (15) while Russian import super middle Dennis Inkin remains spotless at 25-0 (20) with a blistering fourth round knockout of Malik Dziarra.

Next stop, Asia, where in Mandaue City, southpaw light flyweight Bert “Ninja” Batawang goes to 35-11-3 (28) with a sixth round stoppage of Eugene Gonzales. In Tokyo, Japan Filipino Flyweight Champion Federico Catubay stopped Masayuki Fujigake in the tenth. Unfortunately the Japanese fighter had to be rushed into surgery following the bout and remains in a coma due to a blood cot in the brain. Saddoboxing asks our readers to join us in wishing Fujigake a safe recovery from this dangerous condition.

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]
