ByAdam Matson 16/10/200516/10/2005

Round one: the fight starts with light middles Gomez and Perez feeling each other out with no real punches being thrown for the first thirty seconds until Gomez misses an overhand right. Gomez is throwing the jab, straight combination a lot, and both punches and landing with frequency. Perez isn’t moving his feet much, and is trying to avoid Gomez’s straight rights by moving his upper body. Perez traps Gomez on the ropes and unleashes a lead left hook to the body, and follows up with a right upstairs. Gomez is trapped on the ropes and getting hammered with hooks to the body. With forty seconds left, Gomez turns Perez against the ropes and comes with some hooks of his own before backing up and closing the round by moving in circles and throwing the jab.

Round: Gomez 10-9 Fight: Gomez 10-9

Round two: the round starts with Gomez coming out jabbing and Perez countering by lunging inside and landing a left hook the body of Gomez. Perez lunges again with a wide hook but Gomez catches him with a left hook of his own. Gomez is on the ropes again but Perez is swinging very wide and isn’t landing many punches. Gomez comes back and starts popping the jab again, and whenever the fight is at a distance, Gomez is able to land the jab, straight combination at will. Perez is lunging in but is just coming into the straight. Perez lunges inside with an overhand right, and catches Gomez and is able to get him on the ropes. Perez lands two big hooks to Gomez’s jaw but Gomez didn’t seem to hurt. Gomez starts jabbing again and the round closes with him landing a straight right to Perez with his back against the ropes. Gomez’s round. He won it with the straight right.

Round: Gomez 10-9 Fight: Gomez 20-18

Round three: Perez bolts out of his corner and tries to catch Gomez off guard with a straight right, but Gomez lands a straight right of his own. The first minute consists of Gomez jabbing and following with the straight. He is landing both punches at will. Gomez charges in and lands a straight right to Perez’s head that rocks Perez, Gomez follows up with more straight rights and Perez is downed. Perez gets up and starts swinging again with his very wide hooks, which only leaves him susceptible to Gomez’s straight right hand. Perez is staggering around the ring and throwing very wide with his hooks. Perez lands a big right hook to Gomez’s chin and that rocks Gomez. Gomez covers up, and is saved by the bell.

Round: Gomez 10-8 Fight: Gomez 30-26

Round four: Gomez comes out jabbing; he has a very powerful jab, and it sets up the straight right hand very nicely. Gomez just keeps jabbing and forty five seconds into the fight gets Perez on the ropes and the two trade hooks, with Gomez getting the better of the exchange. Gomez is throwing the uppercut a lot more this round, and positioning himself on the inside a lot more then the first three rounds. With forty seconds left in the round, Gomez lands a straight right that sends Perez staggering backwards, Gomez charges, lands another stiff jab, and the referee stops the fight.

With the victory, Gomez, of Guadalajara, Mexico, heads to 14-3-1 (5) while Chicago, IL native Perez drops down to 12-3-1(11).

Chris Billam Smith fighting for Zuffa for the first time this Saturday. I think he is being set up to face Jai Opetia later in the contract. Chris got easily beaten by Zurdo in a unification and we all kn […]

  • Where does Usyk go from here? 27/05/2026
For once, I’m totally on board with the WBC. WBC moves to shut down Usyk-Verhoeven rematch talk I personally have NO wish to see a rematch between Rico and Usyk. Call it defensiveness of our sport. Just like I thought Fury’s narrow escape against Ngannou was cringeworthy… I also feel a sense of dread that we came “this close” to having a kickboxer defeat the […]
