Boxing Round by Round: Anthony Bonsante – Jesse Brinkley

ByAdam Matson 16/10/200516/10/2005

Round one: the round starts with middleweights Bonsante and Brinkley meeting in the center of the ring with Bonsante jabbing. Both fighters are just feeling each other out with the jab in the early going. Bonsante is keeping Brinkley at distance by throwing jabs every time Brinkley takes a step forward. Two minutes into the round, Brinkley looks to be a little frustrated and is putting his head down and charging forward, that just leaves him open to a couple straight right hands from Bonsante. Bonsante controlled the round with his jab as Brinkley wasn’t able to do any damage.

Round: Bonsante 10-9 Fight: Bonsante 10-9

Round two: the round starts with Brinkley jabbing and trying to get inside with the it, but he fails and thirty seconds in, the tide quickly changes and Bonsante is once again doing the jabbing. Brinkley charges forward with the lead left hook to the body, landing that punch but is unable to follow up. The fight gets back to the outside and Bonsante starts jabbing again. Brinkley looks indecisive, with thirty seconds left in the round, he still can’t decide whether or not he wants the fight to take place on the inside or outside, as he has had minimal success with both. Bonsante’s round, again.

Round: Bonsante 10-9 Fight: Bonsante 20-18

Round three: the round starts with Brinkley swinging very wide with a lead left hook and then tying up Bonsante on the inside and throwing uppercuts, but failing to land on anything. The fight quickly gets back outside, with Bonsante jabbing. A minute twenty seconds into the round, Bonsante lands a right uppercut and a left hook to Brinkley’s head. Brinkley has had a lot more success getting inside this round, but hasn’t been able to do anything aside from landing the occasional hook to the body. He’ s missing on everything he throws upstairs, which he might have to land to win this fight.

Round: Bonsante 10-9 Fight: Bonsante 30-27

Round four: the round starts with Bonsante jabbing again, but Brinkley, for the first minute at least, seems to want to get inside a little bit more this round, by lunging with the jab to the body. A minute thirty in, Bonsante gets Brinkley on the ropes and starts unloading with the straight right. Brinkley tries to charge off the ropes but walks right into a Bonsante straight right. Brinkley is a sitting duck, as he is eating every blow Bonsante throws at him, Bonsante ends the round with two big straight right hands.

Round: Bonsante 10-9 Fight: Bonsante 40-36

Round five: the round starts with Brinkley trying to get low and inside once again, but Bonsante is fighting very nicely with the jab, keeping Brinkley at bay. Bonsante is throwing jabs every single time Brinkley charges forward, dismantling every attempt of Brinkley’s to get inside. Bonsante is throwing close to one hundred punches every round, most of them being the jab and Bonsante’s smart game plan really is the story of the fight. Brinkley just hasn’t been able to get any momentum going, as he hasn’t been able to avoid Bonsante’s jab. As the round comes to a close, Brinkley tries to get inside one last time, but Bonsante delivers a straight right that ends the round and the fight. Bonsante’s round again

Round: Bonsante 10-9 Fight: 50-45

The official scorecards read 49-46, 48-47, 48-47 with Brinkley being awarded a unanimous decison. This elicits vocal displeasure from the audience at the Staples Center and is at odds with SaddoBoxing’s unofficial scorecard of 50-45. Regardless, Las Vegas resident Brinkley improves to 26-3 (17) while Bonsante, hailing from Crosby-Ironton, Minnesota comes down to 26-7-3 (15).
