It was a busy weekend in the US and there were a good number of fights that took place so let’s get cracking. On a Goosen – Tutor card from the Taichi Palace and Hotel in Lemoore, California, undefeated featherweight Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero lost his NABF title and perfect record via split decision to Mexico City’s Gamaliel Diaz. Also on the bill, Paul “The Punisher” Williams kept his pristine record intact by knocking out Alfonso Sanchez in five and top women’s lightweight Jessica Rakoczy rebounded from losing her WBC and IBA titles last summer by outboxing Angel McNamara over six rounds.
In Chicago on Saturday, Eight Count Promotions hosted super bantam Ricardo Castillo’s twelfth straight victory as the brother of world lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo saw off Hugo Vargas over ten rounds. In St. Petersburg, Florida light heavyweight contender Prince Badi Ajamu outpointed journeyman Thomas Reid over twelve rounds to take the vacant WBC CABOFE title. Also, former lightweight world champion Stevie Johnston decisioned tough Ukrainian light welter Vladimir Khodokovski over ten rounds.
The week’s premier fight card took place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas when Jermain Taylor retained his WBC, WBA and WBO Middleweight titles by close unanimous decision over former champion Bernard Hopkins in a rematch. In another rematch, Oscar Larios lost his WBC Super Bantam crown to Israel Vasquez due to a cuts stoppage in the third. Former welterweight world champion Ike Quartey continued his comeback after a five year layoff by stopping Carlos Bojorquez in the tenth and final round.
