Boxing Info: Miranda – Eastman

ByBoxing Press 01/03/2006

IBF Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham has had his crown on his head for just a little over two months, and already, highly regarded contenders Edison Miranda and Howard Eastman want to knock it off. But only one of these Middleweight standouts will get a shot at the new champion, and on Friday, March 24th, Miranda and Eastman will clash in a 12 round elimination bout for the number one ranking in the IBF, with the winner set as the mandatory challenger for Abraham.

“THE ELIMINATOR”, which is being presented by Warriors Boxing Promotions, The Seminole Tribe of Florida in association with Hennessy Sports, will take place at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, as the main event of ESPN2’s Friday Night Fights on March 24, 2006.

In the co-feature, former six-time World Champion and veteran boxing superstar Hector “Macho’ Camacho enters the ring for the first time in 2006 when he faces Keith Sims in a 10 round Middleweight bout.

Doors open at 6:30PM, the first bell rings at 7:30PM, and the live ESPN2 broadcast commences at 9:00PM EST.

Known to boxing fans as “Pantera’, Edison Miranda (25-0, 22 KOs) has continued to impress boxing observers with each successive victory. Once seen strictly as a knockout artist, the 25-year-old native of Buenaventura, Colombia, has shown great stamina and ring savvy when he earned a unanimous decision victory over solid opposition in Sam Reese and Jose Varela. In his last bout, on October 21st, Miranda made short work of highly regarded Sherwin Davis, knocking him out in three rounds. And with a mandatory challenger’s spot on the line against Eastman, Miranda is already in camp in Puerto Rico, ready to stake his claim to the championship on March 24th.

Guyana-born and England-based, Howard Eastman (40-3, 34 KOs) has his own reasons for wanting to get the number one contender’s slot, not the least of which is getting a shot at redemption against Abraham, who had a decision victory over Eastman in a hard-fought battle last July. Previous to that bout, the only ones to hang a defeat on the record of “The Battersea Bomber’ were Middleweight champions Bernard Hopkins and William Joppy. On March 24th, Eastman is determined to put himself back up at the top of the Middleweight division and move one step closer to his goal of becoming a World Champion.

Now entering his 26th year in the ring, Hector “Macho’ Camacho (79-5-2, 38 KOs) still has the skill and the swagger to excite boxing fans. A former Super Featherweight, Lightweight, and Junior Welterweight World Champion who has also garnered belts in the Super Middleweight, Middleweight, and Welterweight divisions, the flashy Puerto Rican southpaw is practically assured of a spot in the boxing hall of fame when his career is over. He’s not ready to hang up the mitts just yet, as he’s won 15 of his last 17 bouts, with just one technical decision defeat and a draw marring his record over the last seven years. In his last bout, on July 9, 2005, the 43-year-old Camacho won a clear cut ten round decision over Raul Munoz.

A Cleveland native known as “Pretty Boy’, Keith Sims (25-12-1, 14 KOs) is a hard-hitting 14-year veteran who would like to add the name of “Camacho’ to his victims list on March 24th. After a spotty first half of his career, Sims has come on strong since 2003, winning 8 of 11 bouts, with two no contests.

Additional under card bouts will be announced soon.

Tickets, priced at $25, $50, $100, and $150, are available by calling 954.523.3309 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com.
