Everton Park Sports Centre (Liverpool) played host to some exciting boxing last night organised by Matchroom Sport. The main events being the “Commonwealth Flyweight Championship’ and “Vacant English Super-Middleweight Championship“.

Jackson Asiko (Coventry/Uganda) vs. Jamie McKeever (Birkenhead)
12 x 3 minute rounds – Commonwealth Flyweight Championship

The Ugandan – Jackson “Action’ Asiko – now fighting out of Coventry, entered the ring with a colourful entourage all wearing gold robes – holding his championship-belt aloft and waving the flag of his native country – Uganda.McKeever came out to rapturous applause and cheers from the Liverpool supporters. Within the first 40 seconds of the round – Asiko goes for a couple of powerful shots to the body of McKeever. McKeever carries on but seconds later Asiko lands a hard left-hand punch which rocks McKeever. Seconds later again – and McKeever is on the canvas from head and body shots landed by Asiko. McKeever looks to be struggling to get up but insists he’s ok to the referee. With just over a minute to go of round 1 Mckeever is down again from a right-hand blow, but insists again that he’s fine. He takes numerous punches from Asiko and with just 23 seconds of the first round to go – Referee, Phil Edwards, stops the fight obviously feeling McKeever has taken enough. McKeever took some time to recover in his corner. Sadly, Mckeever was never in the fight and unable to recover between the very powerful shots landed by Asiko. It was a quiet and subdued crowd that left the Everton Park Sports Centre. Asiko won on a TKO round 1

Tony Dodson (Liverpool) vs. Jamie Hearn (Colnbrook)
10 x 3 minute rounds – Vacant English Super-Middleweight Championship

Tony “Warrior’ Dodson entered the ring wearing light blue/white trunks. Jamie Hearn wore black trunks. First round was pretty evenly matched. In the first 60 seconds of round 2 – Hearn is pushed back on the ropes and his head “snaps’ back as Dodson swings a right-hook. Still keeping Hearn back on the ropes, Dodson releases a barrage of upper-cuts which find their target. Hearn hangs on. Dodson sustains a cut above his left eye in the first minute of the round. Referee – Howard Foster warns Dodson for his use of the elbow. Dodson looks the sharper, more stylish boxer of the two men. In the closing seconds of round 3, Dodson is warned again by the referee for holding Hearns’ head down. The first half of Round 4 was a better one for Jamie Hearn – who seemed busier, but in the second half – he is forced back on the ropes as Dodson goes to work. In the closing seconds of the round, Hearn takes upper-cuts and right-hand punches from Dodson and finally “sinks’ to his knees as the bell sounds to end the round. In the opening seconds of Round 5, Hearn takes another barrage of punches from Dodson and again falls to his knees. While he is being counted – Hearns’ corner throws in the towel.

Dodson won on a TKO Round 5

Steve McGuire (Liverpool) vs. Simeon Cover (Sheffield)
6 x 3 minute Super-Middleweight Contest.

Stevie McGuire, wearing white trunks – entered the ring amidst great support from the home-crowd. Simeon “The Power’ Cover – from the camp of Dominic Ingle – wore blue trunks.Right from the first round, McGuire had Simeon backed up on the ropes a lot. Mid-way through Round 2 and Simeon released a big right swing – which seemed to be his “trademark’ punch, but seconds later he was forced back on the ropes again. McGuires’ corner were shouting “Let the punches go, Stevie!” In the first 20 seconds of Round 3, Simeon landed a big upper-cut which made McGuire step back, but again – Simeon is forced back on the ropes as McGuire works on him. Simeon (always looking for the upper-cut) lands another couple. Round 4 – “Watch out for that big swing” the corner shouts to McGuire. McGuire won on points.

Thorpe was to fight David Mulholland of Liverpool – but there was a change of opponent.

Hill won on points.
