In a hard fought see-saw battle this evening, one of Maloney Promotion’s shining stars, Jamie Moore retained his British Light Middleweight crown in a titanic struggle with a very willful challenger in Matthew Macklin at the GH Carnall Centre in Manchester, England on a Sky Sports televised broadcast.

The challenger took the first round by setting the kind of blazing fast pace that stablemate Ricky Hatton has ridden to world honours. The more experienced southpaw champion bolted his guard down tight to weather the storm but was outworked by Macklin. The second was more of the same with the exception of Moore getting the rhythm of Macklin’s attack and scoring with wicked counters to take the second frame.

Macklin continues his torrid pace into the third with Moore studying and trying to pick his spots for counters. The challenger looks to be tiring slightly while Moore seems to be conserving energy for a late rally against what could turn out to be a winded Macklin. Even round.

The fourth sees a good give and take battle developing with an even trading of shots between the two men. This has developed into an intriguing match, too close to tell just who is ahead but Moore appears to be waiting for his hard working rival to slow down before the champion really goes to work.

Round five saw Macklin start to look rather scrappy but still he managed to hurt the champion. By now it’s clear that the Birmingham native is putting everything into an effort to knock Jamie Moore out and he takes the round.

The sixth frame sees Macklin starting to show the damage inflicted by Moore’s counter shots but the younger man is still assaulting the champion with everything he has. There are great shots landed by each fighter and Moore is forced to go on the defensive by a progressively more wild Macklin but the champion takes the sixth by virtue of scoring the higher quality blows.

Again the tide turns in the seventh however as Moore is momentarily stunned but recovers enough to even things out by the round’s end.

The eighth is the most dramatic session yet as Macklin hurts Moore again but the champion refuses to yield and comes roaring back to stun the challenger! It’s an epic battle as both men manage to finish the round but Macklin is finally starting to flag in energy after eight rounds of full on effort.

Round nine is much like the eighth as both combatants are clearly hurt by full blooded shots from the other but Macklin has spent his reserve by failing to knock out the champion in the previous eight rounds. The challenger refused to fold however and finishes the round.

The tenth sees Moore land a crushing southpaw right – left combination to the chin and Macklin crashes heavily to the canvas. The cheering from Moore’s fans in the sold out venue turns to a hush as the champion isn’t celebrating out of concern for Macklin, a friend of Moore’s outside the ring.

The fight is clearly over but everyone was concerned about the welfare of the well-liked Birmingham man who was unconcious for a few minutes but managed to shake Moore’s hand before being taken out of the ring via stretcher to Hope Hospital.

Reports came through from Kerry Kay that Macklin was sat up in the ambulance, which is a good sign.

Jamie Moore has come through another dramatic contest and aftererwards he give credit to Macklin and stated he will be looking to pursue greater ambitions for his next fight in the form of a European or World title contest.

Undercard results: The support bouts were a great show in and of itself with good action from a wide variety of veterans and novices.

Welterweights Ali Nuumbembe vs Vladimir Borovski

Ali (The Silent Assassin) Nuumbembe looks the more polished of the two fighters as he dominates rounds one and two. The Ukrainian Borovski takes Nuumbembe’s punches well though and keeps coming forward. At the end of round two, corner men work on the cut on Borovski’s right brow. Ali suffers a bloodied nose during the fourth as Borovski lands a few punches. Ali is the busier of the two men throwing more than twice the number of punches but having a poor success rate.

Ali Nuumbembe wins on points 60-54

Lightweights Chris Pacey vs Danny Harding

A controversial decision for this fight as “Soldier-Boy” Chris Pacey is beaten for the first time.
Hometown man, Danny Harding retains his unbeaten record , winning on points 39-38. The two looked evenly matched and it was a good contest with a steady flow of punches. Pacey’s corner are clearly unhappy at the decision by the referee. Computer statistics later reveal that Harding threw a larger volume of punches but Pacey had a much better success rate in terms of punches landed.

Middleweights Alex Matvienko vs. Jon Foster

Jon Foster is caught by a couple of uppercuts in round one and is already bloodied.
Trainer Oliver Harrison is shouting to Matvienko from his corner and Matvienko winks in acknowledgment. Jon Foster looks a bit awkward and sustains a cut under his left eye in round two. Matvienko’s corner complain to the referee that Foster keeps holding their
man’s head down. Foster retires at the end of round two.

Lightweights John Fewkes vs. Tomas Mazurkiewicz

John “Fireball”Fewkes has a good first round against Tomas, getting loads of encouragement from Frank Maloney who is shouting from his corner. Fewkes’s corner complain to the referee that Tomas is holding too much in round Two. It’s a good round for Fewkes again though Tomas did get through with a couple of choice shots, but when he does get a decent shot in, he starts to showboat a bit. Round three and Fewkes is looking the stronger of the two fighters despite Tomas holding- again the corner protest to the referee. The fight goes the distance and John “Fireball” Fewkes wins on points 40-37

Other fights included:

Welterweights Craig Watson vs. Michael Medor.
Watson wins on a TKO round one

Light middleweights Brett Flournoy vs. Gatis Skuja.
Flournoy wins on points

Welterweights Mark Thompson vs. Alexander Matviechuk.

Featherweights Stuart McFadyen vs. Abdul Mougharbel.
McFadyen wins on points.

Welterweights Chris Johnson vs. Paul Porter.
