Aussie Olympian Cameron Hammond Set For Homecoming Bout

Australian prospect Cameron Hammond will engage in an eagerly anticipated home-coming next month.

The 2012 Olympian will face Joel Galea over six rounds on a Danny Cheetham promotion at the Memorial Hall in Moree, New South Wales on July 13.

Despite having a population of less than 10,000, Moree has strong history of producing top class sports people, with former international cricketer Peter Taylor and two-time world triathlon champion Emma Moffatt hailing from the town.

But Hammond plans on ensuring that it’s his name being uttered locally after putting on a solid display.

“I’m really looking forward to fighting in front of my supporters and putting on a great show,” the 23-year-old said. “I saw my opponent box his last bout and I realise he’s a tough fighter.

“I’ve been training hard for the fight and I think it’ll show on July 13.”

Manager Matt Clark believes Hammond’s performance will be by far his best yet, thanks in part to some useful advice from a certain four-time world champion.

“After his last bout, Ricky Hatton was giving him some tips on the art of body-punching and Cameron has told me he’s been working on that,” Clark explained.

“Who better to receive advice from than one of the greatest body-punchers of all-time? I’m expecting Cameron’s supporters to lift the roof off the Moree Memorial Hall, the atmosphere should be sensational.”

The Hitman himself added: “I’m looking very much forward to Cameron’s latest outing. People are starting to talk about him and it’s no surprise to me whatsoever because he’s extremely talented. Those talents could lead him straight to the top.

“It’s early days, though, so he just needs to keep winning, impressing and building his fan-base.”
