At Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday night, Ryan ‘Tank’ Aston of Dudley won the vacant British Masters Super-Middleweight Title when opponent – Harry Matthews of York, was forced to retire citing a rib injury at the start of the fourth round.
Aston was bundled to the canvas at the start of the opener but a notable right lands to Matthews’s face and the York man looks stunned momentarily. It was a good round two but by the end of the third Matthews’s right eye was marked underneath and the gestures (while he sat on the corner stool) suggested there was a problem. Team Matthews looked to be wanting to stop the fight, but both fighters were called out to start the fourth round. The bell rang and Referee Shaun Messer immediately stopped the contest to seek advice from the ringside Doctor who spoke with Matthews.
The fight was waved off by Referee Messer after Matthews complained of a cracked rib. A broken rib couldn’t be confirmed but a usually non-complaining Matthews told ringsiders that he was in agony.
Aston wins the Title and improves to 10 wins (4 by KO) 1 loss (1 by KO) and 1 draw
Matthews drops to 12 wins (2 by KO) 9 losses (1 by KO) and 1 draw
The PJ Rowson promoted fightnight featured four undercard fights of local boxers after a fifth contest was cancelled last minute. A disappointed Craig Willshee of Swadlincote was ready and waiting in the changing room to fight opponent James Child, but the Boxer from Brighton was apparently stuck on a train between London and Wolverhampton and unable to get to the venue in time.
Results:
Luke Paddock (Bloxwich)v Paul Haines (Manchester)
4 x 3 Light Welterweight Contest
A notable right punch lands on Haines’s head mid-way through the third round but the Manchester man puts up a good fight and ‘keeps up’ with Paddock.
Referee Gareth Morris gives it 40-37 to Paddock who gets his third win of three.
Haines drops to no wins 9 losses
Jordan Clayton (Birmingham) v Didier Blanche (Newcastle, Tyne-on-Wear)
4 x 3 Super-Middleweight Contest
Debutant Clayton faced Blanche in what was a fast paced but untidy fight. Blanche spent the whole four rounds skipping around the perimeter of the canvas – with Clayton practically chasing him throughout! Clayton gets a couple of warnings for not breaking when told and at the end of the third round both men throw wild swinging shots that causes them to tumble to the canvas just as the bell signals the end of the frame.
Referee Gareth Morris gives Clayton a firmer warner in the fourth (again for not breaking) but he gets the points win 40-36 in what was a frustrating fight for him.
Clayton gets ‘off the mark’ with a 40-36 points win while Blanche drops to 8 losses (1 by KO)
Ricky Summers (Tipton) v Elvis Dube (Derby)
4 x 3 Light Heavyweight Contest
Some nice boxing from Summers – having the busier work-rate with Dube struggling to keep up. Summers uses the jab with success and gets his third win on points 40-36
Dube drops to 5 wins (4 by KO) 18 losses (3 by KO) and 1 draw
Des Bowater (Wolverhampton) v Harvey Hemsley (Bristol)
4 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest
‘D Bow’ had big support from the home-crowd. A busy fighter using both lefts and rights to target the head of the Bristol man. Hemsley still manages to get through with a few of his own shots but D-Bow notches up his second pro-win on points 40-36
Hemsley drops to 1 win (1 by KO) 5 losses (1 by KO)
