Sky Sports’ Cracking New Boxing Season Lineup

ByMatchroom Boxing 04/09/2013

The clash between Carl Froch and George Groves on 23 November, joins a schedule of live boxing on Sky Sports that already includes six world title fights in the first eight weeks of the new season.

The new season of live boxing on Sky Sports gets underway with a mouth-watering selection of international bills during September and October.

Froch v Groves in November complements a packed schedule that already includes some of the biggest names in world boxing, including the technically brilliant Juan Manuel Marquez who so convincingly beat Manny Pacquiao last year, British Olympic hero Anthony Joshua, MBE, in his professional debut and the return of David Haye on Sky Box Office.

The schedule of confirmed live boxing is:

7 September:
Ricky Burns defends his WBO lightweight title against Raymundo Beltran at the SECC in Glasgow.

21 September:
Liverpool plays host to a Commonwealth title double header as Derry Mathews faces Curtis Woodhouse for the lightweight crown and Rocky Fielding tackles Mohammed Akrong for the super middleweight belt, followed by Erick Ochieng and Liam Smith battling for the British light middleweight title.

28 September:
We’re in Manchester to start a heavyweight night of boxing action as David Haye and Tyson Fury meet on Sky Box Office, with Scott Quigg challenging Yoandris Salinas for the WBA super bantamweight title.

The action then switches overseas as Adonis Stevenson defends his WBC light-heavyweight title against Tavoris Cloud from Montreal, Canada, with Liverpool’s Tony Bellew waiting for the winner later in the year.

5 October:
Olympic Gold medallist Anthony Joshua, MBE, makes his professional debut at The O2 in London, before the action moves to Florida, where Puerto Rican three-weight world champion Miguel Cotto tackles Devlin Rodriguez.

12 October:
Las Vegas is the destination for the mouth-watering clash between the unbeaten WBO welterweight king Timothy Bradley and Mexican four-weight world champion Juan Manuel Marquez, while Orlando Cruz and Orlando Salido battle for the vacant WBO featherweight title.

19 October:
Mike Alvarado defends his WBO light-welterweight title against exciting Russian Ruslan Provodnikov in Denver.

26 October:
Kell Brook faces the stiffest examination of his world title credentials when he hosts Vyacheslav Senchenko in Sheffield.

23 November:
Carl Froch puts his WBA and IBF super-middleweight titles on the line in a Battle of Britain clash against unbeaten young talent George Groves.

Speaking about the new season of boxing on Sky Sports, Adam Smith, executive producer of Boxing said: “This is fast becoming one of the most exciting starts to any season. We have all been counting down to the massive heavyweight clash between David Haye and Tyson Fury and now our schedule has been hugely boosted by the fascinating super-middleweight showdown between Carl Froch and George Groves.

“With the likes of Ricky Burns, Anthony Joshua and Kell Brook all in early Autumnal action, I am also really pleased about the addition of some cracking international matches with major boxing names.

“Every fight fan will have their favourite – be it the skill-set of Marquez, the quality of Cotto, the power of Stevenson or the slug-fest that will surely be Alvarado v Provodnikov. We can’t wait for them all! Bring on the new season – it’s going to be fabulous!”

Matchroom Sport’s Eddie Hearn said “I am so excited about the new season and these early international additions are great news for fight fans. It’s a mouth-watering start to the season in Glasgow this Saturday as two weight World Champ Ricky Burns takes on the toughest test of his career in Mexican Raymundo Beltran. I believe we are approaching a golden era of British boxing and you can watch it all unfold on Sky Sports.”

Live boxing on Sky Sports is complemented by a broad range of support programming including the weekly magazine programme Ringside presented by Adam Smith and Johnny Nelson, which returns to our screens on 5 September plus Ringside Extra and the Ringside Specials and ‘The Gloves Are Off’ in which Johnny Nelson chairs a studio discussion with boxing heroes past and present about the issues that affect boxers and boxing.

Sky viewers can also enjoy ‘Behind The Ropes’ documentaries and Countdown specials in the build-up to the Haye v Fury Sky Box Office.
