Unfortunately, International Boxing Federation junior bantamweight champion Luis “El Demoledor” Perez was forced to vacate his title when he was unable to make weight yesterday in Phoenix as part of the Liakhovich – Briggs WBO Heavyweight Championship fight card on HBO on Saturday night.
He first weighed in five pounds above the limit. Two hours later he was only able to make about 118 pounds.
Director of Boxing for the Arizona State Boxing Commission John Montano ruled that there the disparity in weight was too great to let the match continue. He said boxers have an obligation to make their contracted weights and not to do so in unfair to the opponent, fans, promoter and the world title sanctioning organization involved in the event.
