The World Boxing Association mourns the death of former world champion Antonio Cermeno on Tuesday morning in Venezuela.
The information announced so far is that Cermeno was kidnapped and murdered. The WBA family condemns violence, and makes a public call to rescue values and respects human rights in the South American nation.
Cermeno was born on March 6, 1969 in Rio Chico, Miranda State. He became WBA champion after defeating Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez in Puerto Rico, on May 13, 1995. He won the Super Bantamweight title and kept it until 1997. Late in 1998, he won the featherweight title and kept it until 1999.
After his retirement, Cermeno worked to help young sportsmen.
