At the Liverpool Echo Arena on Saturday, Tony Bellew of Liverpool won the vacant WBO International Cruiserweight Title by twelfth round knockdown of Valery Brudov of Russia who – although conscious – seemed unable to get off the canvas after the knockdown. It looked like he twisted as he fell which may have hampered his ability to get up.

Brudov had been on the canvas twice before Bellew was seriously wobbled in the seventh. But the Liverpool hero got some respite after a low blow from Brudov afforded him some recovery time.

This was ‘Bomber Bellews’ first contest at Cruiserweight and he was looking for a good win having suffered his first defeat to Adonis Stevenson in Canada in December. Bellew has been eying up a shot at World Cruiserweight Champion, ‘The Captain’ Marco Huck.

Also on the Matchroom Boxing – Eddie Hearn promoted show billed as “Mersey Beat”, Rocky Fielding of Liverpool was to defend his Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Belt against Ghanaian Charles Adamu. However, Fielding came in overweight by several pounds at Fridays’ weigh-in and was subsequently stripped of the Title meaning that if Adamu was the victor – he would have the Title but Fielding would go empty-handed if he were to win the fight. Fielding won by Unanimous Points Decision 120-108 on all three cards. The fight was not a thriller but Fielding (it was revealed later) fought with injured hands.

‘The Special One’ Kell Brook won by eighth round TKO over Mexican Alvaro Robles and Kevin ‘Mighty’ Mitchell of Dagenham won his scheduled eight round Lightweight Contest against Georgian – Mikheil Avakyan, by second round TKO.

There were also wins for Liverpool trio – Robbie Davies jnr, Neil Perkins and Ryan Moorhead. While Islington man – John Ryder, scored a 60-53 points victory over Georgian – George Kandelaki. Ryder ‘The Gorilla’ goes on to fight Jez Wilson for a British Middleweight Eliminator on the 5 April.
