The WBA Salutes Super Welter Champion Erislandy Lara

Today, our world champion Erislandy Lara is celebrating his 30th birthday. On behalf of his World Boxing Association family, we send him our warmest congratulations.

Lara was born in Guantanamo, Cuba, in 1983. He was always linked to the sport; he was a star member of the national team, winning several titles for his country, and the welterweight World championship in 2005 in Mianyang, and the silver medal in the World Cup the same year, he was also the winner of the Central American Games and the Caribbean Games 2006 in Cartagena.

Lara made his debut in professional boxing in 2008 and two years later, with a record of 14-0, he won the light middleweight WBA Fedelatin championship.

In June 2013, Lara won the interim super welterweight belt when he defeated Mexico’s Alfredo “El Perro” Angulo by TKO. He defended his championship against former champion Austin Trout last December.

Lara was promoted to regular champion this year, and he will defend his 154 lb belt for the first time against Ishe Smith, on May 2 in Las Vegas.

He is a role model athlete, Latin American example, and a loyal representative of the WBA.
