At The Queens Theatre, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, last night, Luke Paddock of Bloxwich won the vacant BBBofC Midlands Area Light Welterweight Title by outpointing local man Josh McLaren.
Despite being sent to the canvas in the opening round, McLaren looked strong until the closing rounds when he began to tire. It was a closely fought and thrilling contest at times but Referee Mark Lyson was not happy when the fighting became sloppy in the mid-rounds and told both men to ‘box’. McLaren’s left eye was swollen and bruised above and below it and Paddocks’ nose was bloody.
Paddock was deducted a point in the eighth round for constant pulling down of McLarens head, but he’d done enough to secure the points win 96-93 to win the belt.
The Errol Johnson (EJKO) promoted show (attended by local former champions – Chris Edwards and Scott Lawton) also featured four undercard fights.
