WBA Update: Sanchez, Rosas, Cordova, Martinez
With the promise of knocking out Challenger Juan “Topo” Rosas, the flyweight interim champion David “Tornado” Sanchez said he was ready for his commitment on Saturday in the Palenque of the Expo Ganadera in Hermosillo, Mexico. .
Sanchez (26-2-2, 20 KO) will defend the championship he conquered in May 2014 when he defeated Venezuela’s Breilor Terán.
He recognized his opponent in turn as a great fighter, “he was a great champion, a warrior in the ring, he is always walking forward”, and added that he hopes he is well prepared, “I am ready for a big fight. A knockout is what are going to have”, he said.
The interim champion talked about the title defended by Rosas in 2010, when he was IBF super flyweight champion.
Rosas (40-8, 28 KO) said to the Mexican press that he is not afraid of “Tornado†Sánchez, “I am well prepared, we will win and I hope Tornado is ready to fight. People know me, they know I die in the ringâ€.
He also said that he had studied the champion, that is why he is sure to win.
The Mexican champion was awarded as 2014 Boxer of the Year by the State of Sonora, Mexico.
Today we remember the Panamanian ElÃas Córdova Jr, who was born 98 years ago in the capital of Panama. He was President of the World Boxing Association. He died six years ago, but we still remember his legacy to the boxing world.
Cordova was a Surgeon, and entered the Panama Professional Boxing Committee in 1957, and was its President for 18 years, being an important part of the local boxing development at the time.
It was a key piece for the staging of a dozen world title bouts, in less than two years.
He joined the WBA Executive Committee in 1965 and became Vice President until 1974, then won the Presidency to become the first WBA Latino President, after half a century of existence. He directed the organization for three consecutive periods.
The WBA family mourns the passing of Mrs. Berta MartÃnez Molina, mother of Gustavo Padilla, international referee and member of the WBA Directorate.
Mrs. Berta was born in Honduras 88 years ago, and arrived in Panama on August 4, 1951.
