At the Victoria Warehouse, Manchester, on Saturday night, Wythenshawe’s Jimmy Kelly Jnr (aka Jimmy ‘Kilrain’ Kelly) won the WBC Youth Silver Super-Welterweight Title by stopping Nodor Robakidze of Georgia in round three.

Kelly entered the ring followed by Heavyweight Champion – Tyson Fury.

The likeable Wythenshawe boxer looked focused as he started the fight – adopting a southpaw stance and targeting the body of his opponent. Switching back to orthodox, Kelly began to work on Robakidze and the Georgian man was soon on the canvas, going down a second time in the third following a peach of a body shot. Kelly wins the WBC title in round three by TKO to extend his undefeated record to 14 wins (6 by KO).

The Steve Wood – VIP Promotions, in association with Red Star Boxing, event billed as ‘Manchester Sound 2’ featured 15 contests in total and provided a great night of entertainment for attendees.

Undercard Results as follows:

Enzo Maccarinelli (Swansea) v Gyorgy Novak (Tolna, Hungary)
8 x 3 Light-Heavyweight Contest

Late addition to the Bill – Enzo Maccarinelli – took just 48 seconds of round 1 to force the stoppage of Novak, who stumbled off balance seemingly stunned by a shot and was unsteady when halted by Referee Mark Lyson, but the Hungarian was not happy at the stoppage – claiming he had just stumbled on his feet (!)

Andy Colquhoun (Liverpool) v Joe Lovell (Connah’s Quay, Wales)
6 x 3 Lightweight Contest

It was a good scrap between these two but it sadly ended early with an unsurprising injury following a clash of heads. Both men had been going at it with their heads in close throughout the contest. Lovell’s left eye was marked and Colquhoun’s left eye was cut by the time they came out for the fifth round of six, but a nasty crack of heads saw the Liverpool man with a cut and swelling to the forehead and Referee Mark Lyson acted swiftly in stopping the fight. At the point of the stoppage Colquhoun was ahead on points and wins by Technical Draw 50-46

Jack Massey (Chapel-en-le-Frith) v Mateusz Gatek (Katowice, Poland)
6 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Massey impressed with some thumping body-shots which saw Gatek down twice in round three.

Massey wins by third round KO.

Sam Hyde (Sale) v Jason Jones (Nottingham)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Hyde seemed over-keen as he came out for this four rounder. The young Sale boxer swung over-enthusiastically – overbalancing on to the canvas in the opening seconds which caused a gasp from the supporters. He was just too hyper it seemed – perhaps wanting the stoppage that never came. It became untidy and both men had a point deducted during the contest, Jones for holding and Hyde for use of the head.

Hyde wins on points 39-35

Ryan Doyle (Gorton) v Dawid Knade (Poland)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest

‘Ruthless’ Doyle – now with Bobby Rimmers Gym – looked cool and controlled as he faced Knade. The Polish boxer was bloody from head-shots as the rounds progressed and was forced to take a knee on the canvas in round 3. He stood for the count but was halted by Referee Mark Lyson.

Doyle wins by third round TKO

Andy Kremner (Oldham) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest

John Murray trained Kremner entered the ring wearing his usual bright purple attire including top hat and bow tie (!)

Kremner looked to have improved (in my opinion), as he went in against Mr. Reliable Laight. A good solid performance from the Oldham boxer who wins on points 40-36

Chris Conwell (Manchester) v Qasim Hussain (Sheffield)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest

‘Conny’ lands the left with regularity to secure the points win 40-36

Artif Ali (Accrington) v Andy Harris (Gloucester)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Harris sustained a cut to the left eye and went down (although not completely) to the canvas in round two and was counted by Referee Ian John-Lewis.

Ali gets the points win 40-36

Alex Rutter (Middleton) v Alex Phillips (Derby)
6 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Rutter is another boxer who looks to have improved, but Phillips gave him a good fight.

Rutter wins on points 59-56

Macauley McGowan (Wythenshawe) v Attila Bardos (Budapest, Hungary)
4 x 3 Super-Welterweight Contest

It was a quick nights’ work for McGowan who took less than a minute to stop Hungarian Bardos.

McGowan wins by first round TKO.

Alex McCloy (Debut)(Blackpool) v Dee Mitchell (Manchester)
4 x 3 Middleweight Contest

Confident debutant McCloy ‘went for it’ in the opening round which looked to catch Mitchell by surprise. The Blackpool man didn’t need any time to settle in to the fight and wins his first pro outing on points 40-36.

Kerry Evans (Wrexham) v Simas Volosinas (Lithuania)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest

Evans over-reaches a few times in the opening round which causes him to go off balance a bit but he picks it up and finds success with body-shots. It was a good round four for the Wrexham man who causes his opponent to stumble after landing a loose shot at the start of the fourth. Evans wins on points 40-36

Paul Riley (Birkenhead) v Chris Jenkinson (Bolton)
4 x 3 Super-Welterweight Contest

It was a close fight between these two. Jenkinson looked fired up and determined. Riley’s nose was bloody from the third round after being subjected to a number of Jenkinson’s shots but he picked it up in the last round to get the points win 39-38

Charlie Schofield (Manchester) v Elvis Dube (Derby)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Schofield gets the points win 40-37
