At Middleton Arena last night, Pat Barratt – Black Flash Promotions in association with British Boxers hosted an evening of dinner, entertainment and boxing.

The event featured six contests from local boxers and was dedicated to Brian Hughes, MBE, hailed as ‘The Godfather of Manchester Boxing’:

Matthew Ryan (Manchester) v Chris Jenkinson (Bolton)
6 x 3 Light-Middleweight Contest

The main bout of the night saw a cautious Matthew Ryan pitched against a keen Chris Jenkinson. There wasn’t enough action from Ryan. His corner kept urging him to ‘keep popping the jab’ but he was too cautious and kept waiting. He continued the same in the second but finished the round more strongly. Round three was a better round with more work from him although Jenkinson had very quick reactions and dodged quite a few shots.

Ryan started putting together combinations in the fourth and lands a decent uppercut mid-way through the round. Later in the round Jenkinson overbalances and stumbles landing with his arm through the ropes. He didn’t touch the canvas and fighting resumed.

As the fifth round ends, Jenkinson rubs the back of his head and gestures to Referee Kevin Parker.

Ryan looked to have been saving himself for the last round because he loosened up and started to let his shots go.

Ryan gets the win on points 60-54

Qasim Niaz (Blackburn) v Kristian Laight (Nuneaton)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest

‘Cast Iron’ Niaz uses continuous long-reaching jabs to the head to keep Mr. Reliable Laight at bay. Not a lot of work coming from Laight but he picks it up in the third. Qasim lands a few body-shots and gets the points win 40-36

Chris Monaghan (Manchester) v Kevin McCauley (Brighton)
4 x 3 Light Middleweight Contest

For me, the best fight of the night. McCauley flew at ‘Fat Boy’ Monaghan as they started the opener and left no doubt that he was ‘up for it’. Monaghan had a good second round and lands some decent head shots but McCauley didn’t look fazed. Monaghan busier and moving around the ring more.

Round 3 was fairly even. It was a good scrap between these two – plenty of action with both scoring shots but Monaghan gets the points victory 40-37

Michael Gomez jnr (Manchester) v Aron Szilagy (Hungary)
4 x 3 Super Bantamweight Contest

A fast first round from these two and it was clear that Szilagy was going to be no pushover. Both men spent the fight skirting round the ropes. Gomez used a variety of shots and kept focussed.

Landing some decent body shots in round 2, but Szilagy keeps going. The action slows slightly in the third and Gomez seemed to have took his foot off the pedal for a few seconds allowing Szilagy to take advantage – pressuring Gomez briefly in the neutral corner.

Both men were showboating in the last half minute of the fourth and final round. Gomez gets the win on points 40-36

Terry Dooley interviewed Gomez jnr alongside his father Gomez senior afterwards. An emotional Michael Gomez Senior said that he was emotional because his son is a better boxer than he was.

Blaze Mendouo (Debut) (Manchester via Cameroon) v Isvan Orsos (Hungary)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

Debutant Blaze had a good physique and dominated over his Hungarian opponent throwing head and body shots. He was busier than his opponent and looked sharper and classy. He looked to have tired in round four but gets off the mark with a points victory 40-36

Zelfa Barrett (Manchester) v Ibrar Riyaz (Blackburn)
4 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest

‘Brown Flash’ Barrett was on the attack in round 2 but eased off at the end of the round. He threw single shots to the head, a few uppercuts and body shots but started to put a few combinations together in round 3. A left-right to the body followed by an uppercut worked well but he only did this once.

He eased off in the last minute of the fourth round and threw a few wild shots. Riyaz was a tough opponent as usual but Barrett secures the points win 40-36
