Massive WBA Heavyweight Champion Nickolai Valuev of Russia retained his belt last night at St. Jakob Halle in Basel, Switzerland, engaging challenger Jameel McCline for three rounds until the American collapsed, suffering from torn ligaments in a knee.
After a feeling out period in the first, Valuev was starting to get his rhythm in the second and the action picked up in the third between both men before McCline went down with the injury, forcing the stoppage when the challenger could not continue.
Valuev, 46-0 (34), continues to creep towards the all-time record in the sport held by Rocky Marciano of forty none victories against no losses although that pristine record of the seven footer’s could come to a stiff test should a unification bout with IBF/IBO Champion Wladimir Klitschko happen anytime soon.
McCline, 38-7-3 (23), who has now lost his third world title bid, will reportedly retire.
