It was a thrilling contest with both boxers giving their ‘all’, but Fagan gets the points victory 97-94
The show billed as ‘Nightmare in Ellesmere’ – promoted by AA Promotions and LongShots Sports, featured nine undercard bouts, results as follows.
[Round 2 seemed to be a popular round!]Matty Fagan (Ellesmere Port) v Adam Kettleborough (Newark, Notts)
English Lightweight Title Eliminator (10 x 3 Rounds)
This turned out to be a thrilling fight. Adam ‘Ket’ stood quietly in his corner when he came to the ring – but he gave a great fight against determined-looking Fagan. Carl Greaves told him he needed to ‘get aggressive’ – which he did, and had a good round three. He took a low blow from Fagan in the fourth and had to take a rest. Fagan finished the fourth round strongly. Both men were landing with lefts to the head. It was a great round 9 for both boxers.
Fagan wins on points 97-94
Steven Lewis (Liverpool) v Karoly Lakatos (Debrecen, Hungary)
6 x 3 Super-Lightweight Contest
Steven Lewis wins by round 2 stoppage. Referee Mark Lyson stopped the contest as Lakatos was under too much pressure in the neutral corner.
Lewis had piled on the pressure in the opening round landing some decent body shots and Lakatos did well to come through it.
Tyrone McCullagh (Debut) (Derry, N.I.) v Tamas Laska
4 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest
Debutant Tyrone McCullagh wins by round 2 stoppage. Laska hit the canvas and was counted by Referee Steve Gray. At the end of the count he said he was ok – but Referee Gray wasn’t satisfied and called a halt to the fight.
James Dickens (Liverpool) v Arnoldo Solano (Barcelona, Spain)
6 x 3 Lightweight Contest
Nicaraguan-born Solano proved a good opponent against fast footed-quick fisted Jazza Dickens.
Southpaw Dickens landed some punishing body-shots but tough Solano took them.
Dickens gets the points’ win 60-55
Ciaran McVarnock (Belfast, N.I.) v Qasim Hussain (Sheffield)
4 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest
‘Irish’ McVarnock got the points win but seemed to make hard work of this fight letting Hussain in with a lot of shots. His corner seemed frustrated with the lapses of inactivity and ‘waiting’ too much – particularly in the last round.
McVarnock wins on points 40-36
Matty Askin (Blackpool) v Tamas Bajzath (Budapest)
6 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest
Matty Askin wins in 2.46 mins of round 2. Having being wobbled in round one by a confident Askin, Bajzath was on the canvas 3 times during the second round. He fell heavily into the neutral corner the third time and Steve Gray immediately stopped the contest. Bajzath stood in the neutral corner while his head cleared.
Askin wins by TKO round 2
Kerry Evans (Wrexham) v Lubos Priehradnik (Slovakia)
4 x 3 Super-Lightweight Contest
Kerry Evans stopped his opponent in round 2. His opponent was under pressure and Referee Mark Lyson stepped in, much to the annoyance of Priehradnik – who protested angrily.
James Metcalfe (Liverpool) v Chris Jenkinson (Bolton)
6 x 3 Middleweight Contest
James ‘Jay’ Metcalfe, aka ‘Kid Shamrock’ wins on a retirement. ‘Twinny’ Jenkinson injured his right hand and could not come out for the third round. Afterwards he said it was a ligament injury (not a break as first thought).
Up to that point – it was just warming up to be a decent fight.
Mason Cartwright (Ellesmere Port) v Ryan Toms (Northolt, Middlesex)
6 x 3 Super-Welterweight Contest
There was huge support from the crowd for ‘Nutty’ Cartwright. He came out enthusiastically but slowed up a little bit in the last round and Toms got confident. Mason had a strong 10-20 seconds at the end of the round.
Cartwright wins on points 59-56
Leon Woodstock (Leicester) v Elimir Rafael (Slovakia)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest
Crown-wearing -‘King’ Leon, aka ’Wonderboy’ Woodstock impressed. An aggressive, flashy boxer who punches heavier than you’d expect. He won on a stoppage in round 2 (ofcourse!) Rafael was counted in the first round when he sat back in the ropes after a shot landed at the top of the forehead. Referee Steve Gray warned Rafael that he was ‘dangerous with the head’ not long after this count. Referee Gray halted him in the second round as he was taking too much punishment.
A second stoppage win of two for impressive Woodstock.
