At Middleton Arena, Middleton, England, last night – Pat Barrett of Black Flash Promotions in association with British Boxers hosted an event which was to have featured five contests.
Sadly, the evening was cut short after the fourth fight.
Sean Ben Mulligan was looking unwell after his win over Duane Grimes and was given attention by the ringside Doctor before being taken to hospital for checks, this meant that the final head-lining bout between Zelfa Barrett and Youssef Al Hamidi, was cancelled.
It was a shame that the show ended on a sad note. Pre-fight entertainment of singer, dancer and rap artist proved popular and there had been a great atmosphere inside the arena.
Thankfully, we hear this morning that Mulligan is ok. He had suffered with dehydration and a burst ear-drum.
Results:
Sean Ben Mulligan (Prestwich) v Duane Grimes (Luton)
4 x 3 Welterweight Contest
‘Ben’ had a good start to this four rounder but seemed to drop in energy at the start of the third round and found himself under pressure on the ropes as Grimes unloaded a number of shots. Then it was as if he took a deep breath, gritted his teeth and dug in – unleashing a couple of decent headshots which looked to wobble his opponent before he put the pressure on and Referee Phil Edwards was forced to jump in and halt the contest.
Mulligan wins by TKO round 3
Mulligan looked a bit lack-lustre following the fight and was seen by the ringside Doctor. Following an enforced intermission while Mulligan received attention – the show was sadly called off. MC Michael Pass announced that Mulligan had been taken to hospital. As the ringside Doctor and Paramedics were no longer present at the venue – the show could not continue.
Blaise Mendouo (Manchester via Cameroon) v Moses Matovu (Bangor, N.I., via Uganda)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest
A clumsy looking fight between these two – both moving from one corner to the next.
Mendouo charges across to Matovu at the start of each session with Matovu having a nasty habit of holding the rope with one glove during round 1.
Mendouo gets the points win 40-36
Michael Gomez Jnr (Moston) v Jamie Quinn (Stockport)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest
Sombrero-wearing Gomez jnr looks like a bottle of pop ready to burst, as he waits to start the fight.
A good, close, scrap between these two men, with both landing shots. Gomez starts to mark up a little bit underneath the right eye in the third round but it’s a great fourth round with both men ‘going at it’ and Gomez targeting the body.
Gomez just nicks the points win 39-38
Alex Rutter (Middleton) v Andy Harris (Gloucester)
4 x 3 Lightweight Contest
Much improved Rutter (in my opinion) – notched up another decent win against a ‘gain’ Andy Harris. It seems Rutter is gaining confidence with each fight.
Great support for the local man who gets the points win 40-37
