It was ‘Fright Night’ at the Castle Leisure Centre, Bury, Saturday, as Pat Barrett – BlackFlash Promotions (in association with British Boxers) – hosted a ‘Halloween Boxing Special’ of six contests.

The event began with Hip Hop Artist – J. Chambers, followed by Singer/rapper Chris Walling who entertained the local crowd before boxing commenced.

Results as follows:

Zelfa Barrett (Manchester) v Ismail Anwar (Huddersfield)
6 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest

It was a good first round in this headlining bout with opponent, Anwar, looking very sharp.
Barrett was caught by a few head shots and seemed a while settling in. I was thinking to myself ‘this is going to be a cracker!’ then Ismail hit the deck in round 2 (!) He got up for the count but was very unsteady on his legs so Referee Mark Lyson waved it off and Anwar sat on a stool in the ring to recover. He stood up for the decision.

‘Brown Flash’ Barrett gets the stoppage win in 2 minutes 50 seconds of round two.

Chris Monaghan (Salford) v Evaldas Korsakas (Hull via Lithuania)
4 x 3 Super Welterweight Contest
‘Fat Boy’ Monaghan was busy and moved around the ring a lot, throwing some big shots and covering up well, but Korsakas was a good opponent and made it a close contest with Monaghan getting the points decision 39-38

Michael Gomez Jnr (Moston) v Qasim Hussain (Sheffield)
4 x 3 Super-Featherweight Contest

Gomez used a variety of shots against tough Hussain and finds success with uppercuts later in the fight. Hussain grins at Gomez mid round two as they circle the ring and he has some success – with Gomez against the ropes a couple of times. In round three, Referee Mark Lyson brings the two men together to tell them to ‘tidy it up’ (holding and hitting).

Gomez indicates to his corner that he (Gomez) has hurt his hand.
They shared the last round but Gomez gets the points win 40-37.

Blaise Mendouo (Manchester via Cameroon) v Shane Dragon-Slayer (Birmingham)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

The Lion (Mendouo) faced the Dragon-Slayer (!) From the ‘off’ Dragon-Slayer’s head is seemingly rocked back by the stream of head-shots. He looked to totter backwards in the second half of the opener from a left jab and his nose was bloody by the end of that round and got bloodier as the fight went on as he took more shots on the button.

He is on the end of a lot of head-shots in the third round particularly. Mandouo was much faster and busier than his opponent who seemed to punch slowly.
Mendouo wins on points 40-36

Sam Hyde (Sale) v David Vicena (Brno, Czech Republic)
4 x 3 Cruiserweight Contest

It took the young Sale boxer just over a minute to oust the Czech. Hyde went straight in there and his second shot – a big right – landed on the button followed by a left. The fight was stopped by Referee Michael Alexander in 1 minute 11 seconds of round one – when Vicena took a body-shot which clearly hurt and was subjected to further pressure from Hyde on the ropes.
Hyde wins by stoppage round one.

Mohammed Fahim (Bury via Pakistan) v Ryan McNicol (Glasgow)
4 x 3 Super-Lightweight Contest

A steady fight but taller Fahim (aka Femi) wasn’t busy enough.

He was caught by a couple of loose shots from McNicol in rounds one and two and then sustained a cut to the left eye (between lid and brow) in the third round. Fahim found some success with the body-shots but needed to throw more. A better round four gets him the points win 40-37

[The pro debut of Laura ‘Cyclone’ Kelly did not go ahead as her opponent had some Visa issues and a late replacement could not be found].
