Manchester’s Terry Flanagan retained his WBO World Lightweight Title last night by a unanimous points decision over Liverpool’s Derry Mathews.
‘Turbo’ Flanagan was the busier of the two men throughout the contest but the fight was messy at times. The champion had delivered a number of low blows and shoves against a ‘not-so-dirty’ Derry Mathews and was finally deducted a point in the eighth for use of the forearm. Despite this, he was undoubtedly the better fighter on the night and scored 117-110; 115-112; 117-110 on the judges scorecards to secure his undefeated record of (now) 30 wins with no losses.
The Frank Warren event at Liverpool’s Echo Arena hosted eleven contests in total, five of which were title fights.
