Boxing Champ Ricky “Hitman” Hatton Takes On Anne Robinson

“You are the Weakest Link, Goodbye!”

This past Saturday night saw a different round-by-round challenge for our very own Ricky Hatton as he faced the very stern looking Anne Robinson in the weekly quiz programme “The Weakest Link”. A special edition of the show featured sporting celebrities, including British Olympic javelin thrower Steve Backley. Raising cash for Charity, each contestant answered trivia questions under the stoney glare of Ms. Robinson.

Round one and the Hitman was asked a spelling question. (He’ll never get that, I laughed before he even answered, knowing full well that Rick might be one of the greatest boxers in the world but he can’t spell for toffee!) “What is the last letter in the word ‘Ballet’?” snapped Ms. Robinson.

To which, Ricky (not looking confident) answered “y”? There were giggles from the audience and Ricky laughed. His second question was “In the seventies hit by the Village People; where can you hang-out with all the boys?” confident now, Ricky shouts “Y.M.C.A!” (but refrains from doing the actions).

At the end of round one, Ricky shared last position having got one question wrong.

Ms. Robinson likes to wind-up contestants by pointing out their lack of knowledge or making sarcastic remarks about their “sport” or personal attributes.

It’s all taken in good humour, thankfully, as Ms. Robinson playfully refers to the Hitman as “Little Rick”. In true Hitman style, he quickly returns the wit by replying that “Good things come in Lickle packages”.

Ms. Robinson admitted her disappointment that Ricky wasn’t wearing his usual boxing attire, saying “On my poster of you (that hangs over my bed!) you’re wearing “dinky’ little shorts”, to which Ricky replied that he’d gladly put some on for her.

Managing to hang on to the next round, Ms. Robinson asked how tall Ricky is; “about 6 foot 2,” he replied. Everyone was laughing now as two taller contestants were asked to stand next to him. “No, Ricky, step-off your podium!” smiled Ms. Robinson.

In round three, Ricky was actually “The Strongest Link” having answered all his questions correctly, but he lost the “fight” in round five having answered one question wrong (regarding the colour of Chardonnay…hmmm…if only they’d asked him the colour of Mr. Guinness instead). “Ricky, you are the Weakest Link! Goodbye,” snapped Ms. Robinson.

Afterward, the Hitman said “Anne’s like a National Treasure. If you can tackle her, you can tackle anyone in the ring!”
