Pat Barrett of BlackFlash Promotions hosted an evening of boxing last night at the Middleton Arena, which showcased four contests. The headlining bout saw a thrilling, all-action contest between Matty Ryan of Middleton and William Warburton of Atherton in which Ryan secured the points’ win 58-57.

Before the main event, the ten bells were rung out in support of the tragic events at Manchester MEN Arena last week in which 22 lives were lost and many more injured. Boxers and trainers also wore specially designed t-shirts for the occasion.

Results as follows:

Matthew Ryan (Middleton) v William Warburton (Atherton)
6 x 3 Super-Welterweight Contest

An exciting contest between these two. It was a great round one with many big punches going in from both men and this continued for the six rounds. Ryan got off to the quicker start in the first half minute, perhaps looking to surprise Warburton, but that was the only falter of the night because it was a contest with plenty of action and both men were scoring shots throughout.

Ryan gets the points win 58-57

Chris Monaghan (Salford) v Casey Blair (Bangor, N.I.)
4 x 3 Super-Welterweight Contest

Monaghan dominates from the off, with Blair throwing few punches in the opener. Blair comes out more enthusiastic for round two and does have a better second round but Monaghan is much busier and throws better quality punches. Round three and Blair is warned for hitting back of head by Referee Darren Sarginson. He is caught by a head-shot at the end of the round but doesn’t go down and Monaghan was slow to react.

Overall, Monaghan dominated - was quick-footed, used a variety of punches to head and body and was busier - but might have gotten Blair out early on if he’d persisted.

Monaghan wins on points 40-36

Lyndon Arthur (Moston) v Remigijus Ziausys (Klaipeda, Lithuania)
4 x 3 Light-Heavyweight Contest

Arthur was relentless with his punches in round one and Ziausys doesn’t return anything prompting Referee Sarginson to encourage him to throw something back. When he does throw a punch, in round two, the crowd cheer! Arthur lands some cracking body-shots and the punches are continuous, despite his corner’s frustration at the single shots.

Ziausys’s nose is bloody in round three and he goes down at the end of the frame. Referee Sarginson administers the full count but is not happy to let Ziausys continue and waves the fight off despite Ziausys’ protestations (!)

Arthur by TKO Round 3

Jake Haigh (Macclesfield) v Mitch Mitchell (Lincoln)
4 x 3 Light-Heavyweight Contest

Nice, tidy boxing from Haigh. He throws a number of sweeping body-shots and Mitchell is forced to go to a knee in the closing half minute of round three, having also sustained a nick to the left eyebrow.

Round four and Mitchell cannot escape Haigh’s punches which are raining down on the Lincoln man unable to throw much back. He sees it through to the end of the round with Haigh getting the win on points 40-35 – his fourth win of four.
