Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano will face the World Boxing Association (WBA) featherweight champion on February 4 at Madison Square Garden, New York, with her sights set on winning the only title she lacks to become undisputed champion of the category.
Serrano is the owner of the IBF, WBO and WBC belts, which has made her pursue the challenge against Cruz, which will give her the chance to gird on the black and gold belt to become the first undisputed champion of Puerto Rico.
“I am very focused on training because I know there will be a lot of action that night. Erika is coming to give everything and so will I. I’m looking to guarantee a victory in style so that my flag moves from side to side throughout the Garden and throughout Puerto Rico,” Serrano told journalist Fernando Gaztambide of Solo Boxeo.
It will be a new episode of the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry and Serrano knows that there will be a lot of motivation for this reason: “I always admire the great Mexican and Mexican champions for their courage and dedication and just thinking that I will face a Mexican world champion in the most important fight of my career is something incredible. I always say that God’s timing is perfect”.
She also talked about the importance of being the star of the evening and how this contributes to women’s boxing. In addition, she pointed out that it will be a complicated war but one that she wants to overcome and that she is still thinking about a rematch with Katie Taylor in the future.
