Schofield dominated Mercado and is new WBA-International champion  – World Boxing Association

American Floyd Schofield became the new World Boxing Association (WBA) international lightweight champion after defeating Puerto Rican Alberto Mercado in a wide unanimous decision on Saturday at the YouTube Theater in Inglewood, California.

The 3 judges scored the fight 100-89 in a 10-round bout and in doing so, the 20-year-old Mercado won a title that will help him continue to grow in his career and make a name for himself at 135 pounds.

The New Jersey native knocked the Puerto Rican down in the second round as a way to show his dominance and kept dominating the fight for the rest of the rounds thanks to his good boxing and strength. Although his opponent was brave and tried to stand up to him, he was no match for Schofield at any point in the fight.

It was the 13th career victory for the American, who has 10 knockouts. Mercado, on the other hand, has 17 wins, 5 losses, 1 draw and 4 knockouts.
