Lightweight is one of the most interesting divisions in boxing today. The combination of talented fighters both young and veteran make for great fights and Devin Haney vs. Vasyl Lomachenko is a clear example.
Next May 20, the youngest undisputed champion in history and a star like the Ukrainian will meet for all the titles at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This will happen barely a month after the media-worthy bout between Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia, which although it was made at 136 pounds, was about two lightweight fighters and a fight everyone wanted to see.
If there is one thing Haney has shown throughout his career, it is that he wants to always face the big challenges that come his way. A clear example was when he fought Jorge Linares when he was only 22 years old or when he traveled twice to Australia to face a reigning champion like George Kambosos.
Now he will defend his crowns against an opponent who has marked an era and is considered one of the most impressive boxing talents, at least in the last decade. The American has worked hard and has speed, height and one of the best jabs in the sport on his side, so he feels confident to win.
For his part, Lomachenko has had a tough three-year road back to a title shot. He lost it in 2020 to Teofimo Lopez and since then has had to defeat Masayoshi Nakatani, Richard Commey and Jermaine Ortiz.
The big question regarding “Loma” is whether his power and reflexes are still the same. He needs to show his best version against a younger opponent who seems to surpass him in several aspects. The Ukrainian has worked for this moment and this is his chance to get back on top.
Haney has a record of 29 wins, no losses and 15 knockouts, while Lomachenko has 17 wins, 2 setbacks and 11 knockouts.
