There was some great undercard action on the Frank Maloney/VIP bill at the Robin Park Centre in Wigan, England on Friday night.

Young Jack Arnfield made an impressive start to his pro-debut when he made short work of Cambridge-boy, Louis Byrne in the first round of a four round light middleweight contest.

Arnfield came out fighting and being keen to impress on his first professional fightnight – was too much for Byrne and the referee stopped the fight.

Arnfield’s stablemate Mike Gomez hardly had time to shout too much from his ringside seat! Jack’s trainer Bobby Rimmer was delighted with the performance as Arnfield moves his record to 1-0 (0). Byrne dropes to 1-3 (1).

Light heavyweight Phillip Callaghan of Leeds was stopped after just 1 minute 21 seconds of round one against Manchester’s Martin Murray. After a shot from Murray, Callaghan’s right eye ballooned within seconds.

Bravely trying to continue but unable to see with the badly closed eye, Callaghan was stopped by the referee under advice from the ringside doctor.
The hard luck continues for Callaghan who remains winless at 0-6-1 (0), while Murray sees his record to 2-0 (1).

Heywood’s Mark Thompson faced Frenchman Frank Harroche Horta in an eight round contest for the Central Area Welterweight title.

The tattooed Thompson had a tough fight against the experienced southpaw who was coming off a narrow majority decision loss to recent European Champion Frederick Klose in June.

The Frenchman smirked throughout the fight and proved more than a handful for Thompson, who took some good shots from his opponent during the first few rounds of the fight.

A 77-76 points win for Thompson sent Horta in to a delayed fury. Jumping down from the canvas in disgust, he shouted ‘Robber, Robber’ as he flounced out of the arena!

Thompson improves to 13-1 (7) while Horta descends to 10-6-3 (2).

Other undercard bouts included:

Welterweight Brett Flourney, 6-0 (2), of Birkenhead outpointed Scarborough’s Ryan Ashworth, 2-2 (1), over six rounds 59-55. This is a good result for
Flournoy as Ashworth held promising middleweight Alex Mattvienko to a draw in his last outing.

Manchester’s hotshot welter Craig Watson, 11-1 (3), got in six good rounds against seasoned Frenchman Frederic Gosset, 11-39-2 (3), and picked up his fourth straight victory.

Commonwealth Light Welter Champion Ajose Olusegun, 21-0 (11), of Finchley, stayed busy in a non title bout against Spanish novice Armando Candel, 5-3 (3), stopping the Iberian import at 2:12 of a scheduled six.

Light heavyweight Carl ‘Dynamite’ Dilks, 4-0 (1), of Liverpool stayed perfect by stopping Retford cruiserweight Lee Nicholson, 3-10-1 (0), at 2:14 of the fourth and final round of their bout.

Southpaw featherweight Mark Moran, 7-0-1 (1), of Liverpool outpointed Gavin Reid, 2-1 (1), of Sheffield, 40-37 over four.
