Ricky Hatton was awarded the prestigious title – ‘Boxer of the Year 2007’ for a third time this week at the British Boxing Board of Control Annual Awards Dinner.
It’s been a fantastic year for the Hitman – who is being hailed as the boxer who has successfully ‘lifted’ the British boxing scene back in to the kind of popularity not seen for years.
When asked, Board Awards Committee Member and former Champion Nicky Cook admitted that ’if Hatton defeats Mayweather next month – he’ll stand a very good chance of getting the award again next year!’
Award for the Contest of the year 2007, not surprisingly, went to the epic British Light Middleweight Championship battle between challenger Matthew Macklin and champion Jamie Moore. Matt Macklin went up to receive the award from Charlie Giles and spoke afterwards of Jamie Moore’s deserved win.
Overseas Boxer of the Year went to Canadian Steve Molitor after he defeated Michael Hunter earlier this year. Afterwards, Molitor said ‘it was an honour to be here tonight’.
Trainers Enzo Calzaghe and James Cook were acknowledged for their services to boxing.
Boxing greats –past and present- came together to share in what has been a great year for British Boxing. Those present included Michael Watson, Joe Calzaghe, Enzo Maccarinelli, David Haye, and Promoter Frank Maloney.
