Bobby Rimmer spoke to SaddoBoxing this morning to confirm that Michael Gomez will be fighting for the WBU Lightweight title in March. Former British Champion Gomez, 34-8 (24), will face Scottish boxer Lee McAllister, 25-1 (5), in Aberdeen, Scotland on 29 March.
Gomez comes back after losing to British Super Featherweight Champion Carl Johanneson in a bloody battle back in November. “ It was a big occasion,” said Bobby. “Michael wanted to fight it his way and was determined to die on his sword and he did!”
“Mike’s been back in training for the past two weeks and seems more relaxed. His training is going great, he’s doing really well. I think he’ll be more chilled for this fight.”
McCallister, who has only suffered one loss in his 26 fight record, will be fighting on home turf. The ‘Aberdeen Assassin’ defeated Craig Docherty in October to take the vacant WBU Lightweight title. Despite suffering a broken nose, McCallister forced a TKO in round nine.
Rimmer is also looking forward to the Blackpool event promoted by VIP Boxing next month where several of his fighters will be on the bill. Welterweight Jack Arnfield will be fighting Martin Murray and stablemate Brian Rose faces Scottish boxer, Eamonn Goodbrand, at light middle.
“We’re really looking forward to it,” Bobby enthused, “Brian and Jack have been working hard on their training. We’ve also got lightweight Jeff Thomas training with us at the moment – he will be fighting Baz Carey on the same bill so it should be a good night. I’ve heard it’s a sell-out already!”
